Engage for what? Russia takes what it needs in ukraine. Looks likely they will be taking the coast.
Making very hard work of it. Why don't they just do what the rest of the world do and trade with them.

Why is it hard work? So long as they do it in under 20 years, they are more successful than anyone else.
If a tortoise had started walking from where the Russians started invading, and walked a steady pace, it would have easily reached Berlin by now. The Russians are bogged down, and cannot get further. They are in a similar situation to Germany was in WWII: a quick war would have worked, but getting bogged down in a war of attrition results in logistics issues. And its one where the Russian cannot win. They have just about reached 200,000 losses, lost thousands of tanks, and they don't have the capacity to replace them in the medium term.
Hardly surprising with the level of corruption and having a nutter (Putin) who people are afraid to give bad news to sitting at the top of the pile.

Since you need them to hurry, makes sense for them to slow down. Why are you in a hurry, electricity bill too much?
Remind me how they defeated a determined enemy, and won, in Afghanistan and Finland.
According to Russia, the war they started is already with NATO!

OK, let me remind you: Nato won after 20 years of war in Afghanistan. Finland won after surrendering to the USSR.
So, russia has 18 years to go before it needs to win. Russia hasn't lost the war until ukraine surrenders. On both counts, russia is winning.

Part of the Nazi calculation for the invasion of Russia, was that the Russian people would welcome them as liberators.
