Fascinating fact about Dartmoor is that it's the only place in England where you can legally "wild camp". Presumably the powers that be don;t want to add any further woes to escaped prisoners

You are very good at telling me what I think but you have no idea at all about what I think prisons should be like. Do you even have the slightest clue what it's like inside a prison? I've spent time in high security cat A prisons, cat b, cat c and cat d prisons all different. Reading the Daily mails slant of prisons doesn't cut the mustard and is fantasy not reality.
what should they be? a place to send criminals, treat them like criminal and release them back into society vex and ready to get back to what they know best, crime? you do know that the vast majority of cons are short term petty offenders who WILL be released back into society? It people like you who don't give cons a chance that's the problem.
You think I haven't been a victim of crime? I was robbed and stabbed 7 times in my own home, had cars stolen. doesn't mean to say I wanted them that did it to be treated bad while in jail. The punishment is your liberty taken away and while in prison a duty of care by law is set in place. If you don't like it then you should campaign to change it.
I worked in holding cells that were to ba aslso used for high security prisoners including terrorist suspects, bomb proof, with microwave scanning for heartbeat monitoring etc with an 'exercise yard' that was a basically a lightwell inside the prison core.
The police said that they wanted a tv screen in there to keep the prisoners mind occupied.
If they were looking at TV even a cartoon or set of random patterns, then some of them were less likely to be thinking of ways to attack the staff or cause other disruption.
This wasn't conjecture, it was based on research and experience
However, they could not do this because they were warned of a probable media reaction along the lines of - ' soft new high security nick gives tvs to terrorists'
Result - more danger for the officers.
People need to think about actual cause and effect rather than a knee jerk reaction

On the subject of death penalty the jury is still out.
I have come to the conclusion that complete solitary confinement for prisoners may have some merit, with piped "brainwashing" images or messages being the only external stimulus.

Little do you know of the prison system is all I can say
Alan Lord and Taylor were in the "block" confined on Rule 43b because of their danger to others. This meant they had no contact with other prisoners and had two screws with them when on movement, while the landings were empty. 23 hour banged up.
If you treat these sort of people like crap they become even more dangerous, not only to the public when released but the prison staff also.

The jury is out in terms of ideology, but the facts of the case are clear
In the US, the murder rate in states WITH the 'Death Penalty' is consistenly higher than other states .
Deterrent value and chance of getting caught are complex.
In NI, joyriders used to get kneecapped by paramilitaries. They still had plenty of joyriders though.
