All aboard!

No, they can go back to France.

They chose to pay people smugglers (illegally) to come here.

No, they didn't. Most bought a plane ticket and flew here. Don't believe the lies the papers tell you to believe.

You must be looking at a different chart to me. It tells you the total number of detected unauthorised arrivals and splits it into air arrivals, arrivals at ports and small boat arrivals. Is there any other way into the UK?

It will not include over stayers, but does include detected undocumented immigrants.

Over stayers aren't being put in hotels or barges anyway, so irrelevant.
Your chart tried to show that the majority of arrivals were those by boat. it did not show the full picture. It only showed those detected at certain points: ports and airports, and the small number of undocumented migrants discovered elsewhere. Therefore it's a mis-diection. The other group, the visa over-stayers, were included in JP's statement. They are not detected on arrival.
But you've now clouded the issue by suggesting that the discussion is merely about accomodation. The thread may have been started about that, but like all threads, it's meandered.
JP's point holds true, the boat arrivals are a small part of the overall immigrants. I quoted 3.8% of all immigrants are boat arrivals. that's a small percentage of the overall number, but it attracts all the right-wing xenophobic press.

100,000th small boat illegal Immigrant arrived today among some 500+ who also crossed. That is quite a big problem.

Round and round we go again, same old right-wing tropes.
There's nothing illegal about applying for asylum.

Were you counting them all? Or are you guessing?

You have the mindset of third-world dictators and drug cartel bosses.
It's people that you are talking about.
I see, your thought process is been driven by deep emotions (or virtue signalling) rather than logic.

Logic would suggest the inward level of migration is totally unsustainable, it will make us all poorer and degrade our quality of life.

It is an easy choice for me, I think there are about 7½ billion too many people on the planet. I would be more than happy to pull up that mythical draw-bridge.

Apparently, this barge costs us more than putting them in a hotel.
As usual, somebody somewhere is making more money from all this.
And that is why the Tories have taken this course of action.
One of their chums (or a chum's chum) is making lots of money out of this.

Whereas I dare say training lots of staff to process the people is not half as lucrative, even though that 1.6 bill would go a huge way towards processing everyone.

Like so many other things, it's a problem that has been allowed to accumulate to crisis proportions:

"There is a backlog of millions of missing homes in the UK

Compared to the average European country, Britain today has a backlog of 4.3 million homes that are missing from the national housing market as they were never built.

This housing deficit would take at least half a century to fill even if the Government’s current target to build 300,000 homes a year is reached. Tackling the problem sooner would require 442,000 homes per year over the next 25 years or 654,000 per year over the next decade in England alone."
London currently has 3.7 million dwellings - So over the next decade you would like to see TWO new greater Londons created, with all the infrastructure of Hospitals, Roads, Railway, Supermarkets, Leisure centrs, Parks, Police, Sewage, Water, Electric.... Two new Greater Londons in 10 years!

Do you think that is remotely achievable or even desired?

Are you suggesting that those who come to the UK illegally are not breaking laws?

The numbers are down since 2022, so the efforts are working slowly. That and a great British summer making it less appealing.

Seems there's been a 200% spike in numbers entering Italy, likely to reflect on our numbers in due course.

I was listening to a radio article yesterday and they were interviewing some Swedish MP, who basically said the EU border countries are adopting a waive through policy on illegal immigrants knowing they are transient and will be heading for Sweden and UK etc. Sweden has changed its policy over the last few months from literarily handing out leaflets telling people how to apply, to rigorous integration of tax, welfare, council etc. systems to identify illegal immigrants. It has resulted in some 1000+ deportations of UK citizens for example. They tend to target them when they are claiming state benefits.

My political ideology is not based on what I'd like, it's based on pragmatism, coloured by my personal moral values.
My aspirations can be based on my idealistic hopes.

Well, if the authorities are counting, then they must be processing them. The only "problem" is that they've used a cheap boat rather than buy an airline ticket. We still need to assess them in the same way. How is that going?

Or is this figure some made up guess for headlines?

And, it's 100,000 in 5 years. Whereas as we had 1,200,000 legal migrants in 2022.
