Hi all,

Looking for experience of anyone converting a house cold pitched roof to warm roof. Can't find much info online about anyone converting an existent roof from cold to warm & roofing companies not really advertising this as a service. It would seem to me if you were having your roof re-slated/tiled that it would make sense to make this change if it fits budget, technically possible & if planning permission granted to raise roof height. We are in a chalet style house where the upstairs rooms are essentially in the roof. Currently the stud walls of the rooms are not insulated and we have the classic cold roof, unvented with insulation in loft space only. Therefore i think it would be quite applicable. Any experience of this appreciated.

Ok, can you elaborate? Is it practical for existing housing stock to convert to warm roof? It doesn't seem common place.

Warm pitched roofs are unusual as well as the lesser of the choices regards practicality. Almost all spec's we see for pitched are vented roof detailing, for obvious reasons, however it does mean access to the roof from beneath, i.e. prior to fitting plasterboard. If you are renovating below as well as above, then breather membrane and vents would be more practical cost effective.

Are you detached? Are you just renovating the roof and not the space beneath? Bear in mind that you will likely have 100mm+ of material on top of the rafters plus counter-battens, battens tiles etc.

Yeah it's detached. Technically the rooms in the roof need renovating but mostly cosmetic. The plasterboard walls/ceiling that make up the rooms are in ok condition so would be mostly decorating. One caveat is the lack of insulation on the plasterboard walls, if this needed doing it's a bigger job and plasterboard needs to come off. The thinking with making roof warm was it reduces the internal renovation requirement at least in terms of insulation. Also we have water pipes in eaves and loft which is not ideal in unheated space. Again it's whether you want more internal renovation i,.e. relocate the pipes or if the roof was warm they could stay..

What about lighting etc? We often tear ceilings down for our leccy. Seems like a big go-around (warm roof) if you end up slapping your head later, because you removed the plasterboard regardless.

Yes that's a good point. I should have said it does need a rewire too so holes will be getting punched in the plasterboard etc
