Clearly nonsense when you can only get the disease once at a time.
It was an analogy to explain how more people catching a "milder", but more contagious, disease can lead to more deaths overall.
If you think of viral load being like bullets, then you can get the disease more than once at a time.
Get shot once and you might survive, get shot 1000 times, less likely.
Get a small dose of covid from one person you passed in the supermarket, your immune system will fight it. Get 20 small doses, your immune system might be overwhelmed.
