BANK HOLIDAY BLUES

Zampa, on that particular case I agree with you - I expect that I'd have done the same.

Making a profit is not the same thing as setting out to rip people off. Business is business - you charge what the market will stand, and if it doesn't make you a living then you change the business.

My underlying point, which hermes was intent on missing, is that I never expect to get something for nothing, nor do I wish to profit from someone else's human error - your wide boy was not interested in paying the fair price, so he got what he deserved.

Similarly, I don't take prisoners when people try to shaft me - I require fairness and honesty in exchange for mine, or a customer becomes an ex-customer. Currently I'm pursuing the Department of Work and Pensions for their actions that contravened certain human rights legislation. Previous victims of their own unreasonableness have been MFI and BT, both of whom settled my claim as soon as the summons arrived. I can't change the world, but I can make my little corner of it the right shape ;)

Congratulations - you've managed to infer something from my post which wasn't there, with no apparent motive other to create an argument, which is why I guess another poster mocked your post.

You implied that you do not charge your mum for the work you do for her.
I implied nothing. I wrote this:

...everything goes through the books, including parts-only bills for jobs I do for my own mother.
For your benefit, since you appear to need it, I'll translate:

everything = all of my business income and expenditure edited to remove all doubt
the books = my business accounts
bill = invoice
my own mother = my maternal parent
parts-only = materials, but no labour element
parts-only bill = an invoice for materials that includes no labour element

If you are doing this work gratis then to claim for your materials is tax evasion...
Not when I charge for those materials on a parts-only bill.

If you want an argument, then bring it on, otherwise get lost.

To summarise:

OOh you sound just like joe-90's older brother.

Sorry to ressurect this but I've been reduced to using my phone as a modem for the last few days, which is very slow.

No, I don't want an argument, I am here for enlightenment and not dispute. Yes I may have misunderstood you but not for any 'motive' as you put it, and the way that you respond to me makes you sound like a bully, which I think is what you are.

I try to be polite to most people on here and if you will try to respond without your frequent use of patronising, sarcastic or rude comments it would be appreciated.

I am interested in getting to the bottom of this business of invoicing for materials only because if what you say is true then I am wasting money.

I'm not so sure about this, do you add much of a margin to your mother's bill?

Fair comment - I was feeling shirty at the time.

There's a difference between being a bully and being guilty of some bullying behaviour; I acknowledge that the latter took place, but I'm certainly not the former.

How'm I doing?

OK. Please ask away and I'll answer as clearly as I can.

I can't remember - probably not. If I do, then there is taxable profit; if I don't, then there isn't. Either way it's all declared and above board - that was my point.
