What Audi did you drive?
Something from the 70s?
Even my first Audi 80 was sticking to the ground way better than other cars.
And for the past 15-20 years, the quattro have made a huge difference.
I can throw my A6 avant around the bends and it doesn't move.
Of course you need to know how to drive these machines.
If you swing the steering wheel to full lock at 70mph, no car will stay on the road.
But with the electronic systems, you give a little hint to the car that you're turning, then swerve it, and it will stick to the tarmac.

I assume you can tell the difference between your Audi and a comparable size bmw.

I'm not a great fan of either, but they drive differently

Amongst some of the worst cars on the planet.
Maestro (much better than the montego in looks and driving) was not a bad offering at the time, in comparison to what else was around.

It didn't have a square steering wheel, that's got to be a plus. (y)

I doubt any of the cars were as bad as some remember, just 'of an era'. I always liked my Triumphs.

Wasn't square. it was quartic if I remember right ?

I think the era of marina and ital was the point when BL got it wrong. Persevering with old fashioned ideas as the competition was modernising

Audis and BMWs are both good in my books, but I personally prefer Audis because I find them more refined and a lot easier to maintain.
They both handle well, but the Audi quattro are better.
I changed rear brake pads and discs on a 320 once and never again.
I can do the same job on any Audi in 30 minutes.
And, I admit I am biased because I've always owned Audis and only driven BMWs a few times.

I think their biggest issue was one of funding. The design offices did their best with the budget which meant reusing engines and gearboxes, floorpans and interior gubbins. I was a big fan of the three Ms (Metro/ Maestro/ Montego, especially the Perkins Diesel) and the 1st generation Disco. The 1st gen 800 saloon was good, too. I was invited by my dealer to drive a G reg 214, which apparently was one of the first off the production line and was very impressed.
And the rebooted Metro with the 1.1/ 1.4 K series was a winner, too. Night and day.

We know.

Most "drivers" prefer the handling of the rear wheel drive beemers.

Pads and discs on a bmw are no different to an Audi for changing. Not sure why you say never again

Research and development, or lack of, was their killer.

They always assumed they were too big to fail and kept going. I understand the budget bit, but it was also a blanket refusal to update, until too late. The 3m's were not a bad offering, and the 200 and 400 were good. If they had caught up and modernised they might have been enough to change their fortunes.

But it was the lack of foresight and observation of competition that did for them. Self inflicted.
 
Guess why I keep on buying Audis.
And with me a lot of other people?
Once you drive one you want it.
Once you own one, you can't go back to other makes without being disappointed.
Perhaps BMW, Lexus and Jaguar, but surely not the french, Vauxhall, Mercedes, Ford or Fiat.
In hard times I could settle for VW.

70's? How old are you?

One I remember was a new a4 est. It was a 3L diesel auto iirc Crappy gearbox with delays and jolts. You have to anticipate if you want to jump onto a roundabout, and if you leave your boot down to turn right, fade out the understeer as you take the exit, like you shouldn't have to at that speed, while the gearbox jolts again. I don't normally drive like that but I'd just tried a BMW which didn't need putting up with on that. The suspension was wrong - not comfortable or tight. Next model up I think had adaptive. The sales guy was agreeing it wasn't great, then he mentioned the "fake" exhaust noise they added to it. Ugh. Could't imagine who'd want that.
I'm hard to please - still looking for a car.
