Excuse? Please explain your views when using excuse instead of explanation.

To excuse is (IMO) to remove a degree of responsibility from the [miscreant].

"He was only a kid".
"He had no father figure".
"He had an overbearing father".
"The education system failed him".
"He was bullied".
"There's nothing for the kids to do around here".

Any of the above may be contributory factors, but in the end, criminality is a choice, as is being law-abiding.

I don't ever see it as an excuse. I see it as understanding. To understand why things happen is the first step to trying to change it for the future.

Have you read jonbey's link? It's really worth a read.

Bloke got stabbed 9 times on a train down this way a few days back

Most of this stabbings are gangs
Drug related

"There was also, at the outset, a lot of stop and search.”....The blacks in London did not care for that and played the racism card.
"Many factors unique to Scotland""..!..Move London into Scotland then... Sorted.

The approach in Scotland was to put in more resources and stop and search everybody, rather than letting police do on the fly profiling.
It can work. It just needs resources. But the role of the government is to create a safe society and protect people, they should be doing this.
There was a good quote in one of the articles about just doing things - in Scotland they just got on with tackling the problem, rather than wasted resources on doing studies, having meetings etc.
Just get out there, stop people, lock them up if they are carrying a weapon, then work on intelligence, get photo, name, address of every person in every gang, then "invite" them individually to discuss their lifestyle, and give them a way out.

Remember The Godfather?
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

It's hard to leave a gang, part of initiation is handing over all your family member names, addresses etc. so if you do a runner, they can go after your family. Nasty business, and will take a lot to stop it. But it needs doing - somebody needs to have the balls to throw money and resources at it until it is fixed. Not possible with austerity, and not possible when the government is more interesting in reinstating fox hunting than stopping armed criminals hunt on London's streets.

This is my point (not about race, that is just plain racist). Many immigrant populations come here with nothing. Even poor families that have been settled in the UK for generations have some wealth in the form of housing or education, but immigrants start right at the bottom, and for many, getting on that first rung of the ladder is near impossible. Race of immigrants really has nothing to do with it. Otherwise, why are there so many poor white people living in trailers in America or Australia, or indeed, many parts of the UK? If you want to see poverty in the UK, head to your local traveller community - there you'll probably meet some drug gangs too, along with many hard working people who are trying to improve their lot.

Take me for instance. My great-grandparents on my mothers side were Irish immigrants. My grandfather on dad's side was a tool maker. None had any wealth, none owned property. The first person to own a property in my family was my dad, when he bought the house my grandparents were living in so they did not get evicted. He manged to get a good education at the local grammar school, and became an accountant. My mum went to the girls high school and got her dream job of a secretary. Education totally changed their lives. By time I was born, they were relatively wealthy and could afford to support 3 boys in their education. Jump back 2-3 generations and if you met my family you would probably say "gypsy scum, get a job".

The biggest problem we face is fighting this idea that people of different colour are the problem. Society is the problem, and we help shape the society we live in. It all starts with secure homes, education, good jobs, respect. Nobody wants to live a life of crime, but for some, it is all they have. Many people in this country want to keep people down though, that is the real problem.

Not saying that all no-white races of immigrants don't aspire to family life, education, community, respect for rule of law, etc, etc. Chinese and some Asians certainly do. On the other hand there's Africans who don't as a whole. That's why the areas of cities where they live always suffer from crime, violence, drug dealing and the predominance of gangs - whether it's here or in other countries, especially The States. London is seeing the effects, and it was always so predictable.

Sorry liberals. You may think the above is racist, but it's also an undeniable fact. Some races are just aspirational, others aren't.

But the role of the government is to create a safe society and protect people,

Virtually inviting the third word in no questions asked, then greatly reducing police numbers will never achieve that. As we can see in London, it's having the opposite affect.

Politicians are the problem, not the solution.

It has got to this stage where people are not allowed to voice their concerns about things like health tourism fraud, immigrants, parts of religions not liked, FGM, or whatever it may be. People are slammed down for having doubts, no matter if unfounded or not.
When you call someone a racist, then you are shutting down debate. How on earth can you show people that their thoughts or information are unfounded/incorrect if you stop talking?
Well, come on then sodthis - let's see you change the views of HawkEye and tansam and ReganAndCarter which they expressed here by showing them that their thoughts or information are unfounded/incorrect.

How long do you think you'll need?

You have to start by separating race from culture. Judge a person by his beliefs, actions and moral code, not by the fact he is nigerian, ethiopian, arab etc.

I can think of lots and lots of Africans that follow impeccable “christian” ethics. I can think of plenty of natives who are workshy scroungers.

Culture is the problem not race.

I don’t know about what it’s like in your your area, but round where I work there are a few youngsters who run around on scooters that they are clearly too young to legally ride and the general consensus of opinion is that they are thieving, purse snatching drug runners and not cheeky chappies/loveable rogues like this 14 year old has been painted but hey ho, let’s not tar them all with the same brush - there may be a perfectly reasonable explanation ellal can give for why he was behaving like he was.
Hmm. No explanation from ellal yet. I was reading on the train home tonight that the lad had been excluded from school. Excluded for nothing he had done at school but for things that appeared on his 'social media' account. I wonder if it was the pictures of him illegally riding his scooter or showing of his handful of £20 and £50 notes and bragging that he was a drug runner? Not justifying what happened to him but it does appear that he was targeted and if that demonstrates and dissuades other 14 year olds as to just what can happen if you get caught up in that type of lifestyle then at least something positive may come out of it.
