Brexit Negotiations proceeding, er...... well...... er....

Greece are in a very unhappy position. On one hand they have debt that they can never repay, on the other hand they do not have the confidence to walk away and go bankrupt, they are convinced that the EU is still somehow good for them, either that or someone has convinced them that walking away would be worse than never ending and ever increasing debt... Be honest, if someone owed you a large sum of money, wouldn't you try to convince them not to go bust? Given that a huge part of Greece's economy is tourism, I would question the need for them to be in the single market as they would have to sell an awful lot of olives to pay off that debt... Greece has already tried to get some of their debt written off but the Troika has flatly refused.. so it seems that the Greek tragedy will continue for some time.

The self-inflicted Greek tragedy you mean.

What is the Troika?

Indeed, the tragedy may be self inflicted by the Greek establishment. But it is the people who are suffering. Surly Greece would never have been allowed to be in this position if the EU hadn't overlooked or massaged Greece's books prior to entry..

You really don't know who the Troika are? How can you comment on EU finances and not know who they are? For everyone else's information, the Troika are the unholy trinity of the European commission, European central bank and the IMF

The same people bailing out Greece and keeping Greeks from starving to death?

But the same ones are also keeping a strangle hold on them as well. They have been lent e7.7Bn, and out of that, have debt repayments of e6.9Bn to make. So they're are being given just enough rope to keep them under control, but not enough that they can do anything with it.

Yes, really. But I'll also admit that it would be daft for them to throw good money after bad. They'll be drip fed enough to repay what's already been lent, but not a lot more than that, or they'll never make any reforms. Merkels hard hitting enough to know how to keep everyone in check.
