most just call it, Letchworth , Despite the fact it should be Letchworth Garden CIty, where as WGC is always called Welwyn Garden City.

I used to live in Letchworth and can vouch for that. The only thing that calls it "Letchworth Garden City" is the sign you pass on the way in.

and the number of people who do not know that Welwyn is NOT WGC and vice versa is unreal

Been there too: spent a good 30 minutes trying to find John Lewis in a tiny village before I gave up and asked someone "Oooh, you're in the wrong Welwyn, you poor thing!" she said. At least my original theory, that I was somehow blind to department stores, was proved wrong.

nope, sorry that claim goes to Milton Keynes with Stevenage a close 2nd

I had my tyres changed in Stevenage once: the chap was telling a lady that it was no big deal her left suspension was sh*gged but her right was fine, he reckoned he saw it all the time because of all the roundabouts.

I did learn another couple of facts about Stevenage:

1 they have the tallest streetlights in the world,
2 they don't have indicator lights fitted to their cars,
3 nor have they cottoned on to the concept that the left-hand lane of a roundabout is not for turning right :!:

Biggest area or most people?

I thought London was the biggest city in Europe on both counts, anyway!

Except then you get into all kinds of issues:

Are you talking about the city-proper, are you regarding the connurbation of London as 3 separate cities (after all, it is!), are you talking about the whole metropolitan area, are you including suburbian areas etc. etc.

I'm pretty certain that there are towns in the UK that are bigger than some cities in the UK on both counts, too!

town with the most mini/normal roundabouts is Skelmersdale Newtown Nr Ormskirk.. very rought place, cops don't/won't even patrol there ...

Dublin is the biggest city in Europe because it keeps on doublin' and doublin' in size!

And is Cologne the best-smelling?

And no-one knows where the capital of Italy is because it likes to Rome?

I'll let you draw your own conclusions about the French town of Brest

Ooh, no, Missus. Titter ye not! Not any more it isn't - cut open an NHDC council worker and you'll find LGC written all the way through

And, recent news would have it, residents have the shortest average life expectancy of everyone in the UK. Huzzah!

Well, I've been a dork of the highest order. When I wrote "city" I was thinking the word "town". It's the honour of living in the biggest town in Europe that Northamptoners are claiming.
