"Sunburn could become the "new asbestos" and the biggest insurance threat to the building industry, experts claimed yesterday, writes the Telegraph. Skin cancer caused by long-term exposure to the sun could generate huge employers' liability claims, insurance broker Aon said. It said the risk could become as important an issue as asbestos, where claims are on course to cost in the region of £20bn over the next few decades."

All those builders bums exposed to the sun for decades........I`m off to examine mine with a shaving mirror

Sounds like an April Fool to me. How can you prove it was the sun when they were employed and not the sun on the weekend?

Asbestos causes a disease only seen after asbestos exposure - so it's easier to prove.

If true it could perhaps be justified, in a sort of poetic way, what with the building industry being such a major player in the alleged destruction of the environment, particularly the ozone layer.

It is true and quite a few of the large builders (I know of at least 2) have already banned shorts and short sleaved shirts when working outside

The minimum site PPE that has to be worn AT ALL TIMES is hard hat, eye protection, high vis waistcoats, gloves, boots and now long sleaved shirts.

It all stems from the no win no fee claims culture. I think when working on site for some things i.e this one, you should be able to sign a claims waver and assess the risk for yourself.

i left a site the other week because of the shorts business (they were sound aslong as they went below your knees) and it was roasting. A day alter i took a chunk out of the shorts on the scaff,so  how can you assess the risk for everyone around you?

Theres no way I would work in this weather without my shorts. If they make us cover up with long trousers and long sleeved shirts, surely there must be a maximum working temperature?
