But where are you really from? Lady-in-waiting has resigned.

The BBC just had another lady on who seemed to think one ethnic person asking another their origin question is ok. She is fully aware of her ethnic origins, africa and is proud of it. The reason she gave - some origins eat different things.

It is very clear why the lady in waiting had problems. The person who answered just did not want to answer in the expected way. The lady in waiting was probably fully aware of that aspect and reacted. Maybe she shouldn't have done that and just walked away. That would also have caused a fuss. I am totally against racism but have strong feeling about people trying to gain news via it in this fashion.

Whilst no one should defend any overt ism taking place, if we're not careful, we're going to end up living in a very vanilla society. Don't say this or you might offend that group, don't say that or you might offend this group
this actually quite an important point.

how is racism addressed if it’s not called out?

I think the media is complicit in turning this into a massive issue as it creates a phoney culture war

Possibly, but it's also very topical in the light of Meghan and Harry.

Some people want to identify then selves different

Americans for example

Some want to identify them selves as Afro Americans

Dunno why

Perhaps I should identify as
Austro / British ???

Exactly, why can't these people just accept they're not really British? /s

Someone I once met asked me my name. Bloody cheek….
"What's your name?"

"Fred Smith"

"No, I mean you real name?"

"Fred Smith. That's what I was christened."

"But what was your original name?"

"Fred Smith. I've always been Fred Smith "

"But when did you change your name to Fred Smith?

I've often been asked if I'm a Hindu, never taken any offense.

I have a mate who's an hairdresser.

Loves his job.

One day a lady asked him:
"Are you Pakistani?"

No why do you say that.

"Because every time I see you your talking Hairdue".

I've worked among Indians and Pakistanis who have their own racial prejudices.
Two wrongs don't make a right and all that, however you've hit the nail on the head. There are ists all over the world, whether racist, sexist or any other kind of ist. And some of it can be subconscious and/or hidden. For example people that only want their children to partner/marry within the same ethnic and/or religious group.

I'm also going to say something that's quite contentious. I'm the product of a white Scottish woman born in Scotland and a brown Indian man born in India. Am I as 'Scottish' as Hamish McHamish who is the product of a white woman and man born in Scotland and who can trace his family history back 500 years, all of them white Scottish.

Yes yes, we all come from somewhere different if you go back far enough in history, however I'd assert Hamish is more Scottish than me. Of course there's a side debate about 'what is it to be Scottish?' i.e. values etc, however based purely on genealogy, Hamish is surely more Scottish than me. No?

Jesus Christ. If someone around here does not call a cheese a cob a "cob", the next sentence is "Where the fukk are you from?"

No way they should in fact in this case the lady most definitely was. Ignore the point I was making if you like.

The other interview. Skilled interviewer, Lady interviewed wanted to get her oar in and came up with a rather strange reply after a number of questions - from a person of none UK ethnic origin.

DIYnot asks your location and Country in your profile, there on the left.

I now feel abused
Did they ask you multiples of times because they didn't believe you owing to the fact your skin is a 'different' colour?
