Chainsaw chain replacement

Hi,
The saw I’m using is as follows.
Bar 14 inch
53 Drive links
Pitch 3/8
Gauge 1.3mm

For what reason can I not use a 52 drive link chain with same pitch & gauge.
There plenty of adjustment there.

I think you should be ok there, if the drive links are exactly the same.....so long as the bar will allow it.
To tell you the truth I always go for the designed number of links.

I was thinking like this.
If the pitch is the same then that means the gear cog in housing will be fine & also the wheel in the end of the bar will be fine.
If the gauge is the same then the chain will sit down in the bar groove.
So only thing left is length hence 53 drive links to 52 drive links.

Does this mean 1 drive link on its own or 1 drive link but also 1 or 2 of its connecting links ? its this bit im not sure about.

With the chain slack i can move the bar back / forth with ease

I think an extra drive link would require a set of joining links on one side only - thinking from memory!
All other parts of the chain should be fine.
Why not get the specified chain?

53 links isnt as common as 52

You say extra but I’m making it smaller remember.

Do you intend to split the chain yourself?
To make sure, why not visit a garden machinery centre who will make you up a chain from a roll?

The bar sliding back and forth with the original chain mounted is not the same as getting a new shorter chain into the guide rails and over the sprocket .

52 link chains arrived today.
Put them on the bar & plenty of adjustment.
Works a treat.
