I disagree with that statement, how can you tar everyone with same brush, I have met some very devout and good catholics who would never even dream of hurting a fly.
I'm not a catholic by the way, I never generalize thats all, all people wether religous -non-religous can do good and also commit evil.
Usually the hierarchy knows and covers the truth, this is what I have a big problem with, if they consider themselves the leaders then should deal with this kind of instance in the first instance, and never let it keep happening.
Governments/religous leaders they are all to blame, for the same type of action/inaction that leads to this, the people who run the show should be held to account.
Will that happen ?? I rest my case.
