Coming to a road near you soon

I've never met anyone who admits to being a bad driver, yet I've seen quite a few . . . . .

Like drink drivers, people who use their phone whilst driving are totally unaware of just what effect it has on their driving. They think they're still great drivers.

Drink driving is still as big a problem as it was back in the 70's & I feel the 'unofficial' Police approach to them is as deplorable as not tackling the burglars. Using a phone whilst driving is slightly different, you don't immediately lose your license when caught, so whoever gets to pocket the fine has a motivation to catch as many as . . . . . !

Be VERY careful when you start endorsing Policing for a profit, because they can be extremely lazy & just randomly ticket anyone who happens to on the road during their journey from the station to collect the fast food order. All you have to do to make this viable is to make the appeals process particularly troublesome.

Not for me, now I'm past my seventies, I don't go out so much now. I just stay in and drink. ;)
Which is a part of the problem. Be honest with yourself & ask the question of how many times you got behind the wheel the next day & you were probably still over the limit?

OK, I've been honest with myself and I asked myself how many times I've got behind the wheel the next day, and I was probably still over the limit.
It's easy, now I'm past my seventies, I don't get up before midday if I've been drinking. ;)
And if I got behind the wheel the chauffer would be a little upset. I suppose I'd have to say, "get in the back!" ;)

I spent the whole evening and the night with the chauffer. ;)

Your Police know that if they sit at one of the entrance/exit routes of any housing estate from 06:00hrs, then at least 1 in 5 drivers will be over the drink driving limit. This figure slightly increases with the average income of the estate. Yes folks, the council 'sink' estate would score a lower average than the 'executive style 4 beds semi developement in a nice rural area'.

They know this, yet this is not a statistic that you will ever find broadcasted on your MSM of choice.

Very few folk here will understand why they don't pull those drivers & banish them from our roads, thus creating the 'statistic'.

Studies have found that using a mobile while driving is more likely to cause an accident as drink drinking.

Do people also think drink driving is ok?

A good old friend of mine was killed by another motorist who was likely using his phone, and drifted into the other lane. Head on collision, both doing about 60 on a straight A road. They were both killed almost instantly.

Cycling Mikey the mobile phone vigilante;

Gets my vote!
Im not a fan of vigilantes for any cause. Whilst I agree with his cause, it needs to be enforced by the authorities.

Once you go down the vigilante path its a very slippery slope

I quite agree, but we are in a situation where the authorities are not enforcing anything. Do we all just lie down and let the villains rule?

Cycling Mikey is not, strictly speaking, a vigilante, at least not in the Charles Bronson sense. He doesn't intervene and try to prevent or stop the criminal committing a crime. He merely points out that the person is committing a crime, records it for evidence and then reports it. Cycling Mikey does not cause the phone crime and does not commit a crime himself. We need more people like him...we used to have more people like him... we need people like him in the Police Force.

Most people look the other way when they see a crime now.

Its not surprising that Devon and Cornwall in collaboration with Austrian Police are trialing it. Devon and Cornwall was the home of zero tolerance speed camera enforcement where they sent tickets out for 31 in a 30. They also famously had to u-turn when they tried to enforces 100s of unenforceable limits. Australia has some of the toughest anti driving laws on the planet. The legislation used to be much more tightly restricted to phones, but now includes any hand held device except a 2-way radio.

There is not much excuse for driving on the phone given most cars have some sort of phone ability now.

Some countries have stricter (tighter) allowances for speeding, but the FPN is not so much, and the points penalty is less, e.g. in France, €45 and 1 point on the licence, just for six months, for slightly over the limit. No need to advise the insurance. Then the FPN is on a sliding scale depending on the amount over the limit.
