Simply because the stats clearly indicated it reduced the risks of both and it's effects if you did catch it..

Extremely rare. Something like 13 BILLION doses and a handful of serious side effects. Safest ever vaccine on the planet. In fact (given the concentration of doses), probably statistically the safest thing ever injected into a human being.
