I've used warm water for years. My 'defrost kit' is a couple of plastic milk cartons. I just sling 'em behind the drivers seat or in the boot, so no need to go back in the house with a kettle or watering can.

I just use tepid or warm water, and the colder the weather the cooler the water. There are sufficient anecdotes found on tinternet to convince me that hot or boiling water just isn't worth the risk.

any body that lives far enough away from the sea knows a thing or two about frost. i use a scraper or a bolster chisel.

I start the car and put my heaters on.

By time I've had my tea and toast the car is frost free, and nice and warm inside too :D

A cup or two of your morning's washing up water does the trick

I de-ice the van thus:

Make sure the wiper blades are unattached.

Turn fan to full on windscreen & aircon on.

Turn wipers on full.

Wait 2-3 minutes maximum.

Works a treat, no chemicals or waiting forever.

Did it this am.

Hee hee! lots of people think hot water will crack the windscreen, but it isn't true!

Not hot water, no, but boiling, yes!!

Imagine: frozen windscreen at -2 degrees.

Now add water at 100 degrees. What will happen?

I live in a nice area, and the car is tucked right down the drive.

Oh, and I sit infront of the CCTV monitor while I have breakfast  (I really do)

Not getting on my eco high-horse, but why use the car for just a 1 mile journey?

Cold water for me, hot water = a call to 0800 36 36 36

Hee hee! lots of people think hot water will crack the windscreen, but it isn't true!

Apart from melting the frost, it gets the glass warm so it doesn't re-freeze or mist up again, it stays hot until after it's dry.

I use a drop of WUL in it.

You could be right, but the RAC don't seem to think so

Follow RAC Auto Windscreens’ five-point advice plan to ensure your windscreen does not fall foul of the frost or law this winter:

  • Get any chips in your windscreen repaired now. In extreme cold a chip can turn to a crack. All RAC Auto Windscreens’ fitting centres offer free windscreen checks.
  • Always carry a purpose-made ice scraper and a can of de-icer in your car. Frost doesn’t just occur at night.
  • Never, ever use hot or boiling liquid to clear your windscreen. The extreme of hot on cold can cause the windscreen to crack.
