Driving in Europe

I left the UK two months ago and have been in Tenerife during most of that time.
I booked a hire car on the internet and picked it up at Gijon. I put my UK licence in and I was never asked for any green card or anything else so going by that I would say that it isn't needed.
Dear God.

You were driving a hire car.

Of course you didnt need proof of insurance cover for the car you own. If your version of reality held, nobody but car owners could ever hire one.

It really does chill my blood to think that there are people so unable to think and so ignorant of rules, regulations, laws etc walking about without carers.

Number 11. No mention of any international driving
permit.

This is like trying to explain particle physics to a dog.

"Customers must have a valid driving licence recognised in the country where they collect the Goldcar".

So if you hire a car in Ruritania, then you need a driving licence recognised in Ruritania.

Which might be your UK licence, or it might not. IT DEPENDS.

You might need an IDP, or you might not. IT DEPENDS.

What on earth people hope to achieve by denying that demonstrable truth, and what their underlying motives are for denying it, I cannot begin to imagine.

Reading my own insurance policy, which arrived just last week, it says no green card is required, I am covered for all of the EU plus several other countries outside Europe.
If the period of cover doesnt begin until 02/08/21 thats quite correct.

What part of rules changing, and that before 02/08/21, e.g. in the "while ago" referenced by Mottie, the rules were different, are you either unable to understand or unwilling to accept?

Guess what. It’s only early days. I told ya, Brexit's a long game. It’ll all work out in the end. You didn’t make all your investments for a profit on day one, did you? So far, against all predictions, we now won’t be troubled with green cards, international driving licences, mobile roaming charges ……..
So the best that someone who decided to run away and hide because he was so scared of the rest of Europe can come up with is that so far things are no worse than they were before when it comes to driving abroad.

What a *R(%*&(%)*# disgraceful way to run a country.

If I’d had waited 36 hours before posting, you'd have still argued a moot point.

Anyway, my point remains. After Sunday, you won’t need a green card for your insurance if you want to take your car to Europe.

You do not need an IDP to drive in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein if you have a photocard driving licence issued in the UK. May be different if you still have a paper licence. Check here.
Vodafone, Three and O2 still say they do not plan to introduce roaming charges although EE will be charging you £2 a day to use your YK package in Europe. That’s basically less than a cup of coffee a day. No buggy.

Yes, contrary to project fear scare predictions. Oh, and I seem to remember a few banging on about our loss of the EHIC card. Technically true but it’s been replaced by the GHIC so again, another failed scare story.

So, green card not needed. Tick
IDP not really needed. Tick
Mobile roaming for most. Tick
No need for EHIC as replaced by GHIC. Tick

oh dear!

Mottie - you could have waited 36 years and you would still have been wrong to say that at the time you were told a green card was needed that it wasnt.

Oh look.

"if you have a photocard driving licence"

In other words it depends. Which is what Ive been saying.

Yes, it may.

Food shortages: tick
Massive increase in inflation: tick
More difficult to trade in Europe: tick
British border force and customs not setup to accept the increase in paperwork: tick

I'm still on the fence with brexit and hoping it all works out,

But I am sick and tired of how long things now take to get here, after 6 months I was hoping for an improvement but it's still crap.

Six months is short term in my books and some of the problems regarding food shortages and inflation is nit just to do with Brexit. There is still a worldwide pandemic going on.

Splitting hairs again. Seriously, I only know one person that still has a paper licence and they don’t drive in Europe. Can anyone on here who drives in Europe honestly say they have a paper licence and drive in Europe?

More than five years since the referendum.
And if Boris hadn’t taken the bull by the horns we'd still be having vote after court case after vote after court case. What a bunch of bad losers you remainers are. The country should have pulled together after the referendum and just got on with it.

We’ll all you need is to get a photo card licence and you’re sorted. Simples. Presumably you have a passport so it won’t even be as difficult or as expensive as getting one of those. If you need a hand with filling the form in, give us a shout. Only too pleased to help. (y)

Actually, I think Johnny boy could be telling porky pies here. You claim to move homes a lot. Greenock, coastal, crossgates. Don’t you have to notify DVLA of your new address every time you move? Do they keep sending you new paper licences then?

Edit: Looks like you have to send a photograph when you change address so on balance, I’d say Johnny boy is either lying about having a paper licence or lying about moving. Which is it?

You haven’t resorted to telling motoring based lies to score a point again are you @JohnD?
