The same taxes should be levied on tobacco and alcohol.
The duty on cigarettes is currently about £3.52, on top of that consumers pay 20 VAT and an additional 16.5% (ie 26.5%)
A 70cl bottle of spirits (40% alcohol) attracts a duty of £7.90, plus VAT at 20%. I recently purchased a bottle of vodka for a friend- it was £13. Remove the VAT and it was £10.83, minus the duty and it would have cost £2.93. That said it was 37% alcohol and not 40% so the duty was probably lower.
