Intrigued about this leaflet requiring a written contract and cooling off period. I guess they are trying to stop people being pressured in to jobs by scammers. Is all this waste license stuff why so many builders drive pickups?

I hire skips and grabs. Works for me rather than be trampy estate car jobber, disposing of his waste at the tax payers expense.(y)

It's the smaller jobs where I might plaster or decorate or both a room, not enough waste for a skip or a 3 ton tipper, it's just a few bags. Some of the commercial tips are up to a minimum charge of £120, that's a lot for 2 bin bags.

Standard (DVSA?) random roadside checks. I'm sure they were not targeting you in particular.

It was well organised, they commandeered a small car park and had someone out on the road directing vans in, they were there for the day I believe.

The council person implied to me that by law, I had to have a written contract for any job over the princely sum of £42.00 The thing is, most of my customers are long term or recommended by long term customers, many over the years have become personal friends.
Reading the council website, I think she may have misled me, I believe it may only apply to cold callers as a deterrent for rogue traders.

We do the occasional small job. Prior to having my lock-up, I would plan a few small jobs to coincide, then get an adequate size skip on my drive to deal with the waste from all of the jobs. I'm allowed to have a skip in front of my container now.

Scrap copper counts as waste.
Change a gas valve the old valve counts as waste
Sand which wrapper
Empty coke can
Ect ect

Don't think a skip would be pratacable tbh

Get yourself a waste carriers licence then dump all your trade shoite along side all your old car seats, sofas, old oil cans and oil filters in your back garden.(y)

A lock up, Nice, I've just nearly broken my neck climbing over stuff in my garage to get to some tools I need on the van for Monday.

A lock up, Nice,
£1200 inc per year for a 40 footer and it's rammed with my building shoite. Christ only knows where I used to keep it before I had the tin shed. Most of it was moved from job to job. Christmas was a bummer though when folks wanted a clean site.

No we have a back garden

And with no dumped sofas oil cans ect ect ;)

Coz you burn it all, before it becomes an eyesore ?

they are referring to
The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013

However, Services bought on a day to day basis are exempt. It is sensible to have your terms of service written down. But the description of service could be. “Do stuff as instructed for £250 per day per person.” Handy to agree a start date too as this avoids cancellation rules.
