Hi guys

I'm having a new bathroom fitted, I have a new 9.5kw shower, my plumber is a former electrician and he says my existing cable is 6mm, he says this is ok to use with a 45A rcbo. However he can't fit it apparently as it needs to be done by someone who can do household work. I've had an electrician come to look at it and he says he'll have to put bigger 10mm cable in as the 6mm isn't big enough. This is going to cause problems as the laminated floor will have to be taken up. Can you tell me who is correct?

Thanks Lisa

the sparky is always right when it comes to electrics, and the plumber is always right when it comes to water..

A 45A RCBO is just about possible, depending on how the cable is installed.

A 40A RCBO would be more appropriate, however this also depends on how the cable is installed.

Thanks for your reply, can you please be more specific what you mean about how the cable is installed?
Does this mean i can keep my existing cable?

Thanks Lisa

if the cable goes through any insulation, runs near any hot pipes, up an insulated wall, run in conduit etc.
all of these things affect the current carrying capacity of the cable.

Personally I would not put more than a 40A cb on 6mm Twin & Earth, no matter how it was installed.

Also, not too many manufacturers do a 45A RCBO for their consumer's unit. What make is it, can we see a photo?
