we've used wi-fi internet in our house for many years. When the house was rewired we had ethernet sockets installed in some of the rooms. How do I find out where these sockets are connected to? should the connection be before or after the router?

Into the router or via a switch if you need to connect more than 4 ….( most routers only have 4 max )

Somewhere in your house you should find a number of cables together

Fingers crossed they will be terminated with connectors and plugged in to an Ethernet switch

thanks, how does the internet signal get to this bunch of cables? from what I can see the cable with the signal
goes straight to the router

There needs to be a cable from the router to the switch.

Have you located the point in the house where there are a few cables

Power line adaptors can be good

For a normal, old-fashioned, telephone line, it splits of the line via a filter, one outlet to your phone, the other, to a modem/router. That last item, provides you with a LAN - your own network. Usually four wired outlets, to enable four separate wired LAN devices to be plugged in. Usually, modem/routers include a wifi access point as well, so your wifi items can connect via wifi.

The modem connects/interfaces your LAN, to the wider Internet.

quote - "there needs to be a cable from the router to the switch". This is exactly the information I was looking for. I just didn't know how the internet signal got to the ethernet sockets in the other rooms?

The “switch” is a box which all the Ethernet cable’s plug into

Have you located Where all the cables run to ?

Post pictures of what you have in the rooms and what you have near the router

You first photo, appears to be a TV antenna amp, so TV cables. Your second photo show mains cables and a joint box. Nothing to do with Internet or LAN cables.

socket in room & wires near router.
