ethernet connections

socket in room & wires near router.
The 4 yellow sockets on the router are where the LAN cables plug into.

we've used wi-fi internet in our house for many years. When the house was rewired we had ethernet sockets installed in some of the rooms. How do I find out where these sockets are connected to? should the connection be before or after the router?

Now the question is where are the installed Lan cables located - do you have a panel of 4 sockets close by the Router location?

we've got a 12m cable that we sometimes connect to the yellow socket but it's not ideal to have it trailing through the house. Part of the problem is that I have got brick internal walls which interferes with the signal to our boosters. Yes, the key to this is to find these cables.

Probably best off asking whoever required the house, could be anywhere lol. But presumably would have been wired to the location of the router at the time ??

yes, agree. Going to have a good look tomorrow as I wonder if its in the cellar. but I can call the electrician if no luck

Open up one of the ethernet sockets, and look at the type/colour of its cable, hopefully you now know what type of cable to look for. Have you checked the loft? PS, there will be a cable from each socket to connect to the router/switch, they can not be daisy-chained.

You can get something like this.

This will allow you to plug in a labelled unit address 1-8 so 8 addresses plugs.

Then find the other ends should be a central point and plug in the master unit and you can confirm which address has been found and you can label the cables up.

You can also use the master unit and the wand to find cables.

For example there was a mass of pre wired unlabelled cables, was interested in finding the right end in control room.

Plugged master in at the device end and used the wand at where the cable end last should all come in took 20seconds to find the cable and another 5 plus minutes to untangle and find the end that’s useable.

Then I could check the cables were good before using them.

In better installations everything is labelled and easy to get to,m.

How many wall sockets do you have installed in the house for Ethernet?

Look for a group of that many cables, most cables have printed info on them so you can read them.

It’s possible they may have put them into a patch panel or Ethernet switch.

But not connected the switch to router as unavailable at the time

do you know how to open this socket? is it an interference fit?
