EU unhappy with astrazeneca

Anyway, back on topic, my money says Ursula will be history by tonight. Should have been last night but as we all know, the Europeans don't tend to rush things.

You're creating a strawman argument. I never disputed anything, I merely remarked, "It's the opinion of the reporter. There's plenty of them about."
You choose whichever one you like and post it up as the gospel according to whatever suits your viewpoint.
There's plenty to choose from, from far-right viewpoints, all the way through the spectrum to far-left opinions, and probably a plethora of other aspects that I haven't mentioned.

Not to mention the fantasies dreamt up by fillyboy and lower.
And all the time diverting attention away from the horrific consequences of the UK's results of BJ's shambles.
What fantasy have I come up with?

Can you consider vaccine nationalism a fantasy?
This has led to the World Health Organization (WHO) warning that nations that hoard possible Covid-19 vaccines while excluding others would deepen the pandemic. “We need to prevent vaccine nationalism. Sharing finite supplies strategically and globally is actually in each country’s national interest,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday.

The EU’s health commissioner outright dismissed on Wednesday an argument made by Pascal Soriot, the Anglo-Swedish company’s chief executive, that he was contractually obliged to supply the UK first.

Which the UK quickly denied. Hence the obtuseness and vagueness of the AZ answers to EU.

Where have I made any reference to vaccine nationalism?

But seeing as you’ve raised it, vaccine nationalism is clearly a reality at the moment.

Just from the first couple of pages of this thread.
I haven't bothered to edit or highlight any specific references. The whole sentiment of your comments suggests your opinion.

Ironically, the production shortfall is being caused by production problems at at European vaccine factory in Belgium run by Novasep, a France based company.

What the EU is unhappy about is that, despite not having approved the vaccine and despite having agreed a contract with AZ after the UK, AZ is not diverting some of it's UK manufacturing capacity to fulfil some of the shortfall caused by AZ's EU partner's factory's difficulties.
They want the UK's supply compromised to address their own factory's failings.
AZ has similar problems production problems in Australia and Thailand, but funnily enough no other country is being reported as threatening to withhold medical supplies to bully AZ into diverting supply from other countries.

I like the way the EU have announced that they now expect AZ to give them the vaccine made in the UK because their factories aren’t up to it.

It sounds like AZ are in an interesting position. If the media i've read is correct (my usual Tory sources), AZ signed a contract with the UK to deliver 100m doses of the vaccine made in UK factories. That contract also says that those factories can't supply any other country until we've had all our 100m doses.

The EU has signed a best endeavours contract that says that supplies will come from a 4 factories, 2 of which are in the UK. Their agreement was agreed 3 months later than the UK deal. I would expect that legally, the UK deal supersedes the EU deal, so the EU contractually aren't entitled to have any vaccine from UK factories until the UK contract has been fulfilled.
Which leaves the EU in a position where they need to attempt to bully AZ with blackmail about future access to the EU market in order to try to twist AZ's arm into breaking the contract that have with the UK.
All in all, it appears to me that the EU have royally f*cked this one up and our much derided government has done even better than we thought.
Interestingly, Oxford was about sign a deal with Merck to develop the vaccine until our government stepped in and funded the vaccine's development. Merck have just announced they've abandoned their own efforts to create a vaccine due to 'disappointing results from the prototype'.

Looks like Von de Leyen is coming under increasing pressure to resign from inside the EU. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Given the mountains that can be made about mentioning the Irish boarder yes it wont make good pr as self interests will make mountains out of it even though there was no mention at all of establishing an actual boarder with checks. What they wanted was how much is being made and where it's going. Westminster is concerned about what the EU will do to protect it's own interests. They have stayed well out of the AZ EU tiff and have said yes the EU can get vaccines from the UK AZ plant,

Some ones head will roll but it wont change facts. The basis problem is simple. All organised to vaccinate people and a bit of a problem - not enough vaccines are available. We even have the same problem here hence disregarding vaccine makers instructions on doses to stretch supply in a way that should be effective in terms of maximising impact. We will know if it does eventually but the early lot did get 2 doses but not that many people.

To be honest I do think the makers deserve some stick. Pfizer doing work to increase production now even thought they knew demand would be high. In some ways they have more problems as the vaccine is unique. AZ are growing virus, creating it is different but growing them isn't and it seems yield has always been a problem even with ordinary vaccines. All potential sources seem to be mentioning large numbers of doses - eventually. When is open and how many etc.

Give it a couple of months and there'll be vaccines given out free with fuel, shopping, airline meals, school homework, etc.
The confinements will then be a distant memory. So put up with it for another few months, then normal service will be resumed.

To be honest I do think the makers deserve some stick.
The age old problem of over-promising and under-delivering.

And which bit of what I’ve written is the ‘fantasy’ you accuse me of?

My sentiments are clear, I don’t like the way the eu has handled this, or the way the eu handled the relationship with the uk. In my opinion, if the EU had been managed better we wouldn’t have left and the whole vaccine debacle summarises what I don’t like about the EU.

But I don’t think you’ll find much ‘fantasy’ in my comments.

True colours have been shown.
Whilst our world leading virologists & genomic researchers are assisting other nations identifying new strains to nip problems in the bud , The EU want to bully other countries, spread nasty smear campaigns, queue jump waiting lists & then break agreements & create new rules just to suit themselves.
With friends like them...............
