EU unhappy with astrazeneca

True colours have been shown.
Whilst our world leading virologists & genomic researchers are assisting other nations identifying new strains to nip problems in the bud , The EU want to bully other countries, spread nasty smear campaigns, queue jump waiting lists & then break agreements & create new rules just to suit themselves.

We'll be back to arguing just how bad Brexit is in no time.

Lets be honest we don't know how good or bad it will be. No one does really. We have been influenced by a theory really with no proof that it will work one way or the other. Have to wait and see. There are lots of powers of one sort or another that don't like the EU for the simple reason it creates it's own internal market and can do what it likes with it. Nationalism aka in many ways as popularism might break it up on the other hand it might not.

Good old Hancock.

" the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was very nearly the Oxford-Merck vaccine - and under the terms of the agreement with the American pharmaceutical giant, there were no guarantees of supply.

The episode played out against the backdrop of the first phase of the pandemic. During March and April 2020, the University of Oxford negotiated a deal which would allow Merck to manufacture and distribute the vaccine it was in the process of developing.

The arrangement made sense. Unlike British-Swedish AstraZeneca, Merck had experience in making vaccines. Its senior executives had links to Oxford scientist and government adviser Sir John Bell.

Yet when the contract reached Matt Hancock's desk, the former adviser said, the health secretary refused to approve it, because it didn't include provisions specifically committing to supply the UK first."

Interesting interview with a european reporter on R5L this morning.

He said that, basically, health in the EU was always taken care of at a national level.
The French, Germans, Spanish et al set up their roll - out infrastructure (logistics, centres, refrigeration, vaccinators, etc), in anticipation of the vaccine.

But the EU took over the procurement and approval, dicked about, and didn't deliver.

He said that the individual states are well - pizzed at the Commission , and are looking for heads to roll.

Von de Leyen doesn't want to be seen to be the person who ballsed - up the vaccine roll-out, (in Notchy's terminology, "own it" ;)), so is looking to deflect the blame onto whatever she can.
Jakob Hanke Vella also explained explicitly the basis for the discord between EU and AZ.
You missed that bit.
He said that when the UK plants were underproducing, the EU plants subsidised their production. Now EU want reciprocity, but AZ are refusing.

We also know from other sources that AZ are blaming the UK contract forbidding such reciprocity.

Where does the truth lie? Clearly there is some explaining to do.

With such inaccurate opinions as yours, who needs fifth columnists.

Can you imagine what would have happened if all and I do mean all countries went for vaccine immediately? The USA has already bought up stocks of certain things that help with covid in the past and were probably one of the countries bidding up mask etc prices. The oil rich were probably doing it as well so the EU stepped in.

A lot of what you have posted is garbage anyway and much of it is down to your's and others imagination. What most of what the EU is currently at is simple - they have a contract and supplies have not materialised. End of. They are not demanding existing UK stock etc or queue jumping. They have clarified certain aspects of their contract and by the sound of it our lot agree.

We are getting a fair amount of Brexit phase 2 in some of the media at the moment. The facts are too boring to report.

Where does the truth lie?

The UK signed up early, worked through the vaccine production issues, and were assisted in the shortfall by the EU.

The EU however dallied on signing-up, dallied on approval, then spat the dummy when this became evident.

......the EU plants subsidised their production.

Very noble.
If it was good enough for UK arms, then why was it not deemed good enough for EU ones?
Bureaucracy?
Or, "let's see whether there's any ill effects on those lot first"?
(Personally, I think the former, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for the latter to be a possibility.)

The EU published what it thought was a redacted version of the AstraZeneca contract. It's not. Open it in Adobe Reader and then open the bookmarks tab on the left. The redacted headings are there in plain text.

both parties claim to have water tight contracts

Most of what u said is down to your imagination or to fit yer narrative

The UK signed up early. AZ worked through the production issues.
I'd be interested to know who you think in government has the capability to work through production issues. Think about 'test and trace', 'schools testing fiasco', 'don't go out unless you go out', 'Barnard Castle', etc.

The EU however dallied on signing-up, dallied on approval, then spat the dummy when this became evident.
The EU signed up later, They were a bit peeved when AZ (and possibly UK, but that is speculation based on AZ's explanation.) refused to reciprocate the partnership shown by EU.

Very noble.

The EU had not yet approved the vaccine. The AZ data set was extremely limiting, and EMA wanted to examine the data in detail.

Or, "let's see whether there's any ill effects on those lot first"?

Your imaginative bias is showing and you're stretching the imagination. (we know that Brexiteers, in general have hyper-active imaginations.)

both parties claim to have water tight contracts
And AZ claim that UK's contract forbids them from using UK plants to supply EU.
Despite AZ guaranteeing EU that there were no contracts that would interfere with the supply to EU.
