EU unhappy with astrazeneca

EU about to approve a rule which requires Pfizer, AZ and Moderna to have to apply for licences to export vaccine.

they have blatantly stated that they won’t allow exports if they don’t have enough vaccine for themselves.

I sincerely hope this is sabre rattling. If it’s any more than that and actually results in deaths, we’ll be heading down a very dark path.

The UK is vaccinating 5 times higher than the EU

Spain has suspended vaccination in some places due to a shortage

Germany have issues

that scoundrel macron as well

the UK ordered vaccine 3 months before the EU got off there arris

now they are looking to blame the UK for there incompetence

The latest is that the EU want to bring in controls that will give them the power to ban the exports of certain drugs to outside the EU.

We apparently did the same, very quietly, last March.
That's what I like about Boris, sometimes you need a sneaky f***** running the country.(y)

I little different to what I heard. At the moment they just want to check what is going where. They are also bitching at AZ for not gearing up production initially to a level to meet demand. They could say the same about Pfizer. Moderna seems to be approved but is there any around? AZ could be diverting to countries that are paying more.

A couple of things that have been said at this end earlier. We have sufficient stocks - suspect that is for the 1 dose roll out. Uk based AZ output to be boosted to 2,000,000 a week I think and the words "hope to" were used. It's also pretty safe to assume it is AZ's plant and not the UK's. I mean privatisation has to be the way. It costs less and always works better and more effectively.

Personally I feel the makers deserve some stick. Countries have put loads into producing it not knowing anything will come of it and removed their liability when it's used and they seem to have gone down the now we have it, it's in use so now we will try and get the output up. Being fair though previously methods were probably part lab based. Moving that to very high volumes could be tricky,

Thinking back to PPE didn't some countries block exports due to shortages? They were were probably going to higher bidders. The EU do think that may be happening with AZ.

Anyway you may hear comments that the eu can have some of the uk's output. It might come from Gove not that it has much to do with him.

A new vaccine Novavax, shows very good results in tests and is now going for UK approval.

The UK has ordered 60 m doses of the vaccine. The European Commission has recently concluded 'exploratory talks' with Novavax.

It's made in Stockton on Tees.

The EU really are shiite at this procuring lark.

didnt the EU do that?

Almost as if modern society relies on a co-operative and fricton free network of materials, ideas, labour and products flowing friction-free between different countries.

Must be quite tall patients.

the UK ordered vaccine 3 months before the EU
Slow and steady sometimes wins the race.
And it's not a first come, first served. EU paid €400M, UK paid about £39M while the vaccine was still in clinical trials, and US paid $1.2B

now they are looking to blame the UK for there incompetence
It's not incomentence to assure oneself of the correct decision. The UK went with the AZ vaccine while it was still in clinical trials. EU waited untilt he clinical trials had been complered.

this is exactly the issue
You mean they over-promised and under-delivered?
We'll wait for the contract details to be published, but experts seem to think that AZ were at fault.
Is AstraZeneca in breach of its contract with the EU?

DW fact check: Probably true. Should AstraZeneca, per its announcement, be able to deliver only 40% of the agreed amount by the end of the first quarter, it could be in "breach of contract", according to MEP Tiemo Wölken of the Social Democrats. However, he pointed out that he does not have a copy of the contract to hand

Additionally, whether it has any bearing on the current problem or not, AstraZeneca have been avoiding paying corporation tax for over seven years:

you havnt presented anything useful to the discussion there bobby.

you posted a link to an mep that doesnt know what is written in the contract.

AZ is not being investigated for tax avoidance and has no bearing on them being able to produce the vaccine.

AZ would not promise something with something so unknown.
