"England and Wales no longer recording excess deaths for first time in more than six months, ONS says

For the first time in more than six months, England and Wales are no longer recording excess deaths, the Office for National Statistics reports.

It says in the week ending Friday 12 March the number of deaths registered in England and Wales was 4.4% below the five-year average for this time of year. "

Hmm...

I wonder why?

The thing is were all locked up in our houses or offices, so it is expected this will be lower, however had we free reign to do whatever we want it's very probable the data would show a very different story

Has Lal ever posted a feel good thread? All bad UK news is feel good news to her. :)

Most of us post a feel good thread here and there. Elle never ever ever does.

I think we should all meet up in Quiz® to chear us all up.

On the Coronavirus update tonight, Chris Whitty said 111,000 excess deaths to date reported by the ONS.

So you are wrong.

Very good point

Lockdown / Covid sceptics scream about excess death figures claiming they prove Covid is just a touch of flu.....conveniently forgetting there have been massive interventions reducing spread.

Millions of vulnerable people have been taking lots of precautions to mitigate risk.

26 million people vaccinated, and deaths reduce?

coincidence?

Take it up with the ONS...

As reported they are saying that now they are not recording excess deaths.

Would it be reasonable to assume, that over the last twelve months that, given the 'stay at home', 'work from home', 'school closures', 'reduced travelling', 'businesses closed', etc, there ought to have been a reduction in deaths compared to an average year, if there had not been a pandemic?
Of course, Covid has affected that, but if the measures had been introduced, without Covid, there would have been a reduction in deaths.

Doesn't that mean that the pandemic has had an even greater effect on excess deaths, than is immediately obvious?

for a change i'm agreeing with you, Ellal has made him/herself appear rather silly on this one.
