Perhaps they need to look into opening if possible the lines Beeching closed down, if they want to get people out of their cars.

I can't imagine that those who are now paying the expanded ULEZ zone tax (some 500-700,000), have cheaper, better alternatives for their journey (as it was before the tax). Maybe a few are daft enough to spend more for a worse experience, but 1/2 a million+

No these people pay because they have no reasonable alternative.

Maybe @Mottie window cleaner or TV aerial installer could get their ladder on the bus.

This is the thing. On a tv prog a few days back they debated 'has it been a success?' and the folk saying 'yes' pointed out the number of complaints has started to drop quite significantly. However to me that doesn't necessarily mean it's working for all individuals, more just a case of folk feeling defeated so they put up with it.

I'm in Fife and if I want to go to Glasgow (which isn't that frequent tbh) I'll still drive and accept the fact I'm going to face a fine. If I'm going to Edinburgh (again not that frequent) and the intention is to remain in and around the city centre I'll take the train unless I'm heading home later in which case I'll drive in case I want to stay beyond the time of the last train home.

How so - i'd think tyres would be the same on both vehicles?

EVs are generally heavier; more wear on tyres.
EVs have a LOT more torque: hence why they can accelerate (again, generally) a lot more quickly than ICE cars.
Greater acceleration = more tyre wear (taken to the limit, think burnouts).

Yeah we have the following initiative in Fife, it's a LOT more of this kind of thing that's needed if they want to encourage folk out their vehicles, along with MUCH more buses.

I'll say again I think generation has a part to play in this to an extent, yes I'm using a broad brush. I'm now in my 50s, have been driving since my late teens and want to keep driving whenever I can until I'm no longer able, by which time maybe driverless tech will mean I can retain use of a personal vehicle Whereas my nephew in his 20s has never driven and, so far, says he has no intention of ever learning.

I suspect you and I are similar age, and my tan from spending 4-6 months in the med every year is a match for your builders tan gained from tarmac-ing drives. As I've said earlier, it's not people like me who lose out. It's the poorest in London who pay the fees and those who scrap are still waiting to be paid.

ULEZ expansion was only ever about taxing poor people.

Would have been a much better plan than HS 1 and 2 But most people thought that anyway

More trains to more places has to better than a few slightly quicker trains between 2 cities
