Then he has taken responsibility for his action and should face the consequences for that action. Mention to him that you now feel unsafe with the door offering no protection anymore and is there any likelihood of a surprise visit by the HSE then stand back and watch him run around checking everything ;)

But joking aside that person doesn't seem the right person for the job and does the manager know what he has done?

dont forget liability to prosecution goes all the way to the top unless it can be proved that they have accepted and covered their responsibilities.

the email i got back from her said she'd asked the big boss and advised all the fire wardens to be more vigilant (which is not true because the guy i sit nect to is a fire warden), so effectively she had covered all the bases.... i want to challenge that backed not only by common sense... but by law....

(and i've so obvioulsy given my identity away if anyone from work uses this here website lol)

Afaik
every work place has to legally display a health and safety notice

This also has to show ,the location of the local HSE office
Might be worth locating and reading that.

health and safety is just a way of avoiding blame and claim.

none of the 'officers' give a cahoots about anyones health, but care a lot about the health of the bank balance of their employees.

She's using the policing of the area as a getout but if you are being vigilent all the time how will you do your work? ;)
Seriously though has she done a risk assessment? I doubt it as she would know shes talking bull.

thats your opinion but frankly you couldnt be more from the truth, the reason they are there is because of the law, companies of a certain size HAVE to have a health and safety rep or dept making sure of the safety of their employees and visitors.

Id love an example of how health and safety "avoids blaim and claim"?

It seems to me that those that slate H&S are doing so because it restricts them from being unsafe, otherwise if one works safely anyway why should it restrict you in any way?

Back to original point.

Fire door being left open is not good, grass them up to the authorities. No different to having a smoke detector and taking the batts out.

There is no cost agenda here, the door is already there, it just needs to be shut.

i was hoping for a 'yes/no' answer to this, but three pages on....it's like everything in life.... nothing is simple.

i'm really torn on this issue.... i hate people that fool with danger at the expense of others... "let's prop open this fire door because i'm a bit warm" .... yet i hate seeing people that have to wear safety goggles, kneepads and chainmail gloves just to cut the ribbon on a new building opening ceremony.

Bottom line for me is err on the side of caution..

Just as an addendum the fact the door is open is I believe because of complaints of being too hot? correct? do you know that there is currently no high limit to temperature in the workplace only a lower limit, therefore "comfort" doesnt come into it.
There may be another way of getting around that though by complaints of feeling faint or the like to cajole the employer into perhaps hiring coolers?
This would be better than leaving the safety door open anyway.

Who in H&S gave that directive? or was it again a local decision?

yes i knew that.... been through the discussion many times...but that comes down to the 'owner' of the building? to install aircon? i want to 'force' my company to look after my welfare.... and not prop open fire doors
