After an electrical inspection through our house I have been advised that I need to fit Class 2 light fittings to be safe or else have the house rewired. Obviously I am going for the cheaper option. I have bought some Class 2 light fittings. My question is:

When fitting them where there is an earth wire do I leave it there in the connector or do I snip it off and seal it and just have the live and neutral connecting to my light fitting.

many thanks.

How many lighting positions have earth wires at them, and how many don't?

Ditto switches (which in line with the advice re Class II lights must not be metal)?

Just wondering what happened to the option of sorting out the earth continuity of the lighting circuit(s)....

As Bas says , you could sort out the earth continuity or just have the lighting circuit(s) rewired.

did he explain why?

As already mentioned do not snip or cut off, terminate in connection block, if more than one earth connect them all together.

But the concern here is obviously you do have some earth cores, so either at some time there has been alterations made to the lighting circuit on a non-earthed circuit or you have an earthed circuit but for some reason continuity has been lost.
