French Colonial Empire.Good or Bad?

It certainly does beg the question.
Any benefits brought by the Romans was not for the benefit of the indigenous population.
It's a metaphorical and hypothetical question, and should be seen in that light.
The Romans did little for the indigenous population. That wasn't the motives for their invasions.

Couldn't agree more

It's just so sad that some, having been brought up on the diet of imperialism and colonisation being for benevolent reasons, have to resort to insults and whataboutery, as a resistance against such enlightenment, when they're nearing a Damascene conversion

It does illustrate the awareness of some, that they feel the need to post a thread asking if the creation if an empire is a good or a bad thing.

Maybe they need to woke up.

What we and others did all those years ago can never be mended. It's history all we can do is learn from it and live and love. Otherwise a big can of worms is going to get spilt.

Tell gasbanni and Durhamplumber, who started the threads.
And others who appear to take the attitude "ours good, yours bad".

I don't believe that.
Nor me, and, I suspect, like you, I don't underestimate the difficulties.
I just wasn't about to take the discussion in a different direction.

I consider apologies by senior politicians a good starting point. It's at least a recognition of the past atrocities.

I met an English fella and his Dutch/Australian girlfriend in Hong Kong.
I was on my way to India he was on his way to Indonesia.

We were opposites but got on very well.
He loved the Dutch culture and way of life. He hated the British (English), everything we stood for. He hated what we did to India. I had to educate a very educated hippy about what the Dutch did to Indonesia.

There is a Museum in Jakarta that I recommend he visited. Fascinating but the Dutch were evil.

With his view on our colonial past I hope he didn't have the cheek to settle in Australia.
