Good riddance tobacco!

John, I think you're wasting your time,

Smoking Can Lower Your IQ

Smoking diminish the speed and accuracy of your thinking and bring down your IQ.

Nicotine and the Brain

A large part of the reason that smoking makes us less intelligent is because of the way it effects the brain.

The drug produces changes in a person’s mood that are mainly controlled by effects in the brain. When a smoker inhales, tobacco smoke reaches the lungs and absorbs rapidly because of the huge surface area. From here the nicotine enters the blood. Nicotine concentration in the blood rises quickly and there is a rapid uptake of nicotine into the brain, as shown in animal stidies. This action actually causes a depletion of oxygen which may be why people who smoke have a lower intelligence factor.

The long and short of it is – if you smoke, do the smart thing and quit.
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver." ~ Jack Handy WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may leave you wondering what the hell happened to your bra and panties.
"When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. So, let's all Get drunk and go to heaven!" ~ Brian O'Rourk e WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may cause pregnancy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." ~ Benjamin Franklin WARNING: The consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like a ******. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza." ~ Dave Barry WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell your friends over and over again that you love them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a Support Group. Salvation in a can! ~ Dave Howell WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you can logically converse with members of the opposite sex without spitting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went: "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Let's party folks

Thanks triple L - it was my attempt to add a light hearted view to this debate. There has been some really good diatribe here, albeit somewhat backhanded slagging off by some members, but good none the less.
It's still a free world where I live and should I choose to have a ciggy etc etc I know the possible outcome. Same if I wish to eat lots of takeaways or anything else that the Guardian reading self appointed do-gooders tell me not to. As for youngsters starting smoking, I have four children and only one of them smokes. Indicative of todays younger generation - you tell me. I would be more concerned about youngsters falling into the evil traps of gangs and drugs. Of course smoking is a abhorent pasttime undertaken by people that should know better, but, so are most things in our life. Forget the banal remarks made by certain members on here, we live our lives as we see fit. In my opinion, our younger generation are more inclined to drink more than smoke and it would be nice to see the evidence put forward by others that our younger generation have started the evil habit.

It took 30 pages to get a balanced, common sense post - without abuse.

Better late than never! ;)

My post was done in tongue in cheek ;) If I could help 1 person giving up smoking, I'll be happy but not the way the Government are doing it although they are right regarding making some rules making it more pleasant for the non-smoker. The only gripe I have is the attitude of some of these smokers with no respect for the non smoker.

There's a lot mentioning about fatties, smokers and drinkers but what about me or others that look after their health, We are also paying tax for people who couldn't careless about their health.

I have replied but you ignore it

This was what I wrote

I am highly dubious plain packaging will have any positive effect.

1. once you have hidden displays, what is the point of plain packaging.

2. if it is still legal, is it right to deny brands?

3. no brands - no advertising - no display - all that is left to compete on is cost, I am highly dubious plain packaging will have any positive effect.

This was your reply

You have no objection to it, then. Perhaps you think that tobacco merchants like glossy, embossed, stylish packaging for some reason other to improve their sales.

So I list objections, you reply I have none, and address none of the clearly listed objections.

And you think I'm the troll

As to point number 3, I will expand.

No advertising means nothing to compete on other than cost, you think a price race to the bottom will help in your goal to protect kids. And do you remember being a kid? Can you remember ANYONE at that age that would be put of or encouraged by plain or glossy packaging. Now when you were a kid they may still have had advertising, so think carefully.

Kids smoke for silly social reasons, think carefully, do you think plain packaging will make it less or more cool?

but what about me or others that look after their health, We are also paying tax for people who couldn't careless about their health.

People like us who look after their health, are the biggest drain on the system.

You might want to think about protecting fatties and smokers for your own self interest.

Because if you start down the road of rationing health care based on how much a person has paid, and how much they cost.

You might end up destroying the NHS.

it would be nice to see the evidence put forward by others that our younger generation have started the evil habit.

...BTW I think it's fantastic news that the proportion of 16 to 19 year-olds who smoke has dropped from 40% in 1974 to 19% in 2010. Let's hope we can keep reducing it.

See fig. 6.2
http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/can...moking/lung-cancer-and-smoking-statistics#age

The proportion of over 60's smoking has dropped from 34% to 13%. We know why there are so few old smokers.

19% of children smoke.

Do you know what else is interesting.

18% of children grow up in "poverty" (or the modern definition of it).

Join the dots.

(And still waiting for JohnD to reply on plain packaging).

but the question still stands, if it is so expensive to the state, why is it not already banned?

In a word.
Revenue.
Which still outstrips the burden on the NHS for smoking related diseases.
(I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that one.)
I'll get my shamefaced apology in now  just incase.

but the question still stands, if it is so expensive to the state, why is it not already banned?

The question does not still stand, it has been debunked.

Total lifetime health care costs

Obese......... .............. Smoker ............ healthy........
€250,000 ............... €221,000 ................. €281,000

EDIT, and try and read the whole document, or at least skim page 17, it challanges the whole "cost to society vs state" tollywash.

In two words...

...smokers vote.

Figures already show that the country would be a billion better off without fags.

probably because there are still a lot of tolerant people who, reluctantly accept that if a grown woman or man wishes to smoke himself or herself into an early grave :( they can be allowed to do it.

the pro-smoking lobby likes to invent stories about a ban or criminalisation of smoking so they can spout on about their freedom to die early, even though their freedom to do so is not being attacked.

However the freedom of the tobacco industry to recruit new young addicts to an early death, is under attack, and a good thing too.

You will notice that the pro-smoking lobby on this thread spouts much more about imaginary bans, which they have made up themselves, than about the true objective of cutting the number of children and young people who take up this vile addiction.
