Interesting point, so who did in fact 'own' Palestine?
The people who lived there. The Jews who were there prior to the partition, and the Palestinians who were there prior to the partition.
Half of the Palestinians were driven out by the Jewish paramilitaries.
And the Jews instigated a mass immigration policy.
Eventually introducing a Right of Return, even for Jews who had no previous family connection to Israel
Wrong, the 'Jews' declared their right to the portion of Palestine as declared in UN resolution 181, something many Palestinians today accept as 'fair'.
Wrong, the comments and notes in the UN article that I have linked to, make it clear that Jewish expansion was always the goal.
E.g.
From writings of Zionist leaders, it is evident that Zionist policy was to occupy, during the period of withdrawal, as much territory as possible (including the “West Bank”) beyond the boundaries assigned to the Jewish State by the partition resolution. A comprehensive military plan, called Plan “D” (or Dalet) was described by an Israeli official:
“In March 1948, Haganah High Command prepared a comprehensive operational Plan ‘D’, .... Zero hour for Plan D was to arrive when British evacuation had reached a point where the Haganah would be reasonably safe from British intervention ...The mission of Haganah was as simple as it was revolutionary: ‘To gain control of the area allotted to the Jewish State and defend its borders, and those of the blocs of Jewish settlements and such Jewish population as were outside those borders,
Begin writes: “In the months preceding the Arab invasion, and while the five Arab States (Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Transjordan) were conducting preparations for concerted aggression, we continued to make sallies into the Arab area. ...But it was clear to us that even most daring sallies carried out by partisan troops would never be able to decide the issue. Our hope lay in gaining control of territory.
Surely any UN resolution enjoys the support of the UN?
But they could not support or police the Resolution as they thought they would be able to
The end of the mandate and the birth of Israel
As the hostilities in Palestine escalated, efforts intensified in the United Nations to find ways to stop the violence. A United States proposal to place Palestine under temporary United Nations trusteeship met strong opposition from Zionist leaders, who saw in it a possibility of a reversal of the partition decision. A move to negotiate a truce was similarly opposed. ...
“It had been anticipated that the trusteeship plan would be adopted without difficulty; but within the two months since its proposal, the situation had again altered radically;…
“… When it became clear in the Assembly that the trusteeship plan could not be adopted, another delaying formula was devised – a ‘temporary truce’:...
“On the issue of this truce, as on that of the trusteeship, I was never in a moment’s doubt. It was plain to me that retreat would be fatal....
During the months preceding the end of the Mandate, Jewish forces had moved to occupy key cities and areas in the territory designated for the Arab State. Ben-Gurion writes that before the Mandate ended:
“… no Jewish settlement, however remote, was entered or seized by the Arabs, while the Haganah … captured many Arab positions and liberated Tiberias and Haifa, Jaffa and Safad … So, on the day of destiny, that part of Palestine where the Haganah could operate was almost clear of Arabs”.
On the termination of the Mandate, Jewish forces moved to occupy further territory beyond the boundaries specified by the Partition resolution.
Thus the expansion began in 1948.
There is more, a lot more that illustrates that the UN was unable to guarantee it s own resolutions conditions.
The British were fed up with the whole situation, they just wanted to wash their hands of it. What's wrong with that?, dealing with arabs an be exasperating.
They (the British) were a peace keeping force between Jews and Arabs. But in the face of the difficulties, they left 6 months earlier than planned.
The Jews had attacked them and stole their weapons.
If you read the UN records, I suspect you will arrive at the same conclusion that I have, the Jews started out with the intention to expand the territory under their control, at every opportunity, and with violence, and to clear those areas of Palestinians.
Many nations foresaw the repercussions, and voted against the partition plan, or abstained, but they were in the minority.
