I would not say I was upset, simply pointing out that a preacher of green ought to be green and beyond any criticism for using resources. To prove green credentials, really she ought to take a wooden boat and row it.
Still no evidence, just muck throwing I see.

To campaign for such issues means one often has to go to conferences. As its a global issue, one often has to travel great distances to meet up with others.

It is the leaders that can make a real difference of course. It is they who can drive policies for cleaner fuels, and more renewables. And address issues in agriculture.

She has done about as much as a teenage girl with autism can possibly do on this issue.

So that's a "no" then, it wasn't built for her.

I also know people who have gone on large container ships to the US. Now such ships are dirty emitters, but they are going anyway, so the person's actual footprint is minuscule.

Well, so are the transatlantic passenger aircraft, so she might as well have flown anyway :p

So you now agree that coal isn't used much these days. At least we're making some progress.

Still waiting for any evidence for any of your claims.

I pointed out that there wasn't much coal generation still in use, long ago. Keeping any plant ticking over just in case, costs a lot of money.

But her carbon footprint would have been higher, and she wouldn't have achieved so much on this issue.

What you're basically saying is that because someone's carbon footprint is above zero, they should fly. Maybe you should think about the fallacy of what you've just written.

I already told you this doesn't happen. Renewables are not supported by coal, but by gas.

whatever your views.. I was impressed that she'd attempt such a crossing given how rough its been lately. However I'm suspicious there may be a few porkies being told about her progress. They claim to be half way but AIS appears to be off? Can anyone find a current location? The (MMSI) number is 211768710

I think wind power is about as green as it gets!

But this argument is silly. You're basically saying that the only people who we should listen to about anything to do with the environment are hermits living in caves that have never gone anywhere.

I could not agree with you more, but it is the changing of wind energy to electrical energy where it all comes apart.

Why do you think you are being charged a surcharge on your energy bills, if these sources are as free as you suggest?

I'm fairly green, but I try not to be stupidly and obsessively so. I would not dream of burning lots of fuel, to go protest. You can only be genuinely green by assessing the overall picture, which is where many go so very wrong, including governments.

So we have a 16 year girl suffering from autism, jetting round the world, preaching to everyone about how they ought to be concerned about green issues and climate change - who is herself making a massive contribution to that change, even supposing it might be the cause. Sorry, but I find it all rather silly.
In terms of the facts rather than the imagined sillyness, she is specifically not jetting round the world - she's been traveling around Europe by train, and is sailing to North America.

For every 1Mw wind generator, there has to be conventional fossil fuelled generation on standby for when the wind doesn't blow. For every solar panel there has to be conventional ready to pick up the load, when the sun goes down. How is that green?
It's a bit more complex than that, but to answer your question directly: Whilst there is a carbon cost to maintaining fossil fuel standby available, it's (obviously) a lot less than the carbon cost of having that fossil fuel system available and in use when solar or wind generation can be generating. (Building a bonfire and burning it occasionally has a lower carbon cost than building it and having it constantly burning)

South America and four members of the boats crew are to go there by air. All in all, had she gone simply as an fair paying passenger - instead of four air passengers, it would have just been one. How green is that?

It is all rather hypocritical, to increase greenhouse gases oneself travelling massive distances, yet be critical of others doing the same and to a much lesser extent.

I can't help chuckling at the idea that had she traveled by air you'd have been congratulating her for not sailing...

I am not impressed that either option was green at all, why could the crew not stay with the boat? In this modern communication age, why does anyone need to travel to any conference at all? Green, would have been everyone staying at home and teleconferencing.
