If you accept we perhaps pretend to live in a civilised society, then the following applies :-
What the guy did is disgusting and I mean disgusting. However we have what we call a justice system in this country. Offenders aren't sent to prison to be punished inside, their punishment is their loss of liberty.
Now WRT the crowd that gathered, yes they are disgusting too. However, as tempting as it may be, comments such as have been posted wishing harm upon someone simply debase you to their level.
I agree with many commentators that rather than lay about in Jail there are many useful tasks that prisoners could do, however to subject them to torture, humiliation etc is not conducive to any form of possible rehabilitation.
And if you're wondering, I find the perpetators actions, utterly offensive.
