I live in a bungalow with (mostly) bungalows around me. The properties are all detached but relatively close to each other. My bedroom is at the rear of the property. When I'm in bed at night it's totally silent. Bliss.
I sometimes wonder if this nighttime silence would be maintained if any of my neighbours opted to get a heat pump. The logical place for them to be installed would be at the rear of the properties i.e. where most of the bedrooms are and back gardens all back on to each other. I've read good and bad about noise generated from the external unit, especially if these aren't properly maintained. Even when they are, some still say there can be annoying hums emanating from them.
Does anyone on here have a heat pump or a neighbour in close proximity who has? And if yes what is the noise like at night? Some of the comments below this article make for interesting reading, with many citing noise as an issue.
I have this picture in my head of streets that are quiet at night, gradually becoming 'hum zones' if more and more get heat pumps installed as part of the green initiative drive.

More homes to get £7,500 heat pump grants from Government £325m top-up
The Government is putting more money into the Boiler Upgrade scheme which gives grants for heat pumps - as well as scrapping red tape around the green devices.
