Happens all the time, but when it results in a death...
They get this treatment as part of their rehabilitation, not as a reward for what they did. Personally I would like to see the scrotes beaten on a daily basis and rehabilitation should consist of more beatings.
Try breaking the law yourself and tell a plod that you were under a lot of stress. Watch him laugh at you.
I was once arrested (the only time ever) for ABH on a woman. The only witness to the incident saw her attack me and me defend myself by dragging her to the ground where she hit her head. The two women police officers who arrested me said that they needed to hold me while they looked for other witnesses who might say I attacked the women.
Ended up in a cell for six hours. and was released without charge.
She was not arrested, not charged with anything and got away Scot free.
This incident happened when I was 60 years old. Until that day I had nothing but respect for the plod, now I hold them in contempt.

But you forget that Ian Tomlinson wasn't throwing bricks, bottles and packages of excrement at the police, was he? He was acting quite casual all the way throughout. How would you have reacted had the same officer hit you with a baton and then forcibly shoved you to the ground?

No, he was staggering around (blind drunk, it later transpired) right in front of the coppers and visibly lurched towards the police line on the video pictures just before he was put down.
If I'd have been having stuff thrown at me all day then I'd have decked him as soon as he got within arms reach too!
For all they knew he could have been armed, out of his head on drugs, or tooled up with a suicide vest.
Yes, the officer over-reacted and should be disciplined for it. But at the end of the day anyone who dies as a result of lunging towards a line of riot police in the middle of a major kick-off is just demonstrating that natural selection still works!

Where does it say in any report he was blind drunk? Post links if you can find them,,, (you may need the help of the CIA and MI5 (they're good at producing evidence which contradicts everything else))

Have you seen the video? Did you watch the video? Where does Ian Tomlinson "Lunge" towards officers ? In a manner so threatening, the officer felt he had no option left but to "put down" (quite literally as it transpired) this individual?

had that video been filmed in Meadowhall or at Ascot, then i'd probably agree.... but the events unfolding were a full blown riot FFS, so anyone not retreating volunterily was either an antagonist, or under the influence...

But the fact is, he died within, what, half an hour , after being shoved forcefully to the ground by an officer (who also covered up his own identity) who then lost his rag.
Facts are facts. If you happened to push someone to the ground because you were stressed and lost your rag, and that person died within half an hour of your action, I'd like to think that you'd feel responsible for that persons death and face the consequences.
Even further, Had you done the deed (instead of a police officer ) you'd already have been charged with manslaughter.
What that officer did that day is indefensible in law. He's supposed to be upholding the law. How can he uphold the law, yet break that same law in the execution of his duty?
He deserves , dismissal from the force, loss of pension rights, and a lengthy prison sentence.

Martian,,, watch the video again. Was there a full blown riot taking place in the immediate vicinity of Ian Tomlinson?? I certainly can't see any signs of a "Full Blown Riot." in any of the scenes showing the attack on Ian Tomlinson.
