You are taking a headline as gospel, when it declares the asault as a slam dunk proven occurrence, when it's quite obviously not.
A quick read of more than the headlines make that clear.

One needs to take care of accepting brief headlines as the true interpretation of the occurrence.

It's not a proven assault yet, nor by whom, if it did really occur, but you have already blamed it on the peaceful marchers.

Why would he lie to police?

Why would anyone destroy public property?
Why would anyone tell lies about the RNLI ferrying asylum seekers?
Why would anyone tell lies about trans access to toilets?

Maybe he has an opinion on the march.
Maybe he was joslted whie being escorted from the station.
Maybe he disliked the noise.
Maybe he thinks he had more right to sell poppies than others to protest.
There's a myriad of reasons why people twist the truth or tell outright lies.
Bing old, being an ex-service man, selling poppies does not prevent anyone from telling lies, or exploiting a situation.

We need to wait for the outcome of any investigation before jumping to conclusions and making incorrect accusations.

It shouldn't be too difficult given the number of CCTV cameras normally on stations, including the multiplicity of people taking phone videos.
