How can a March for Peace be Incompatible with a Memorial for those Killed in Wars.

It's an interesting one, because the way the public order act is drafted. Approval is with the Home Secretary, but the request has to come from the Police chief.

There is nothing illegal about a peace march to support the poor people of Gaza. The proposed route, certainly meets the criteria for restriction, but that is the Met chief's call not the Home Secretary.

Isn't it a case they haven't the numbers to police an illegal march that gets out of control and therefore have handed over the responsibility to the organizers of the march to share some responsibility.
The government can sit back and spin the outcome to put themselves in a favourable light.

They either have or have not got confidence in the met chief. If it kicks off, he's probably out of a job.

It would have been better to demand assurances from the met and mayor and ask them to consider all necessary steps to ensure safety and public order. Thats enough of a hint.

I was under the impression Rishi had said he wanted the march banned and then someone had a word in his shelllike to say you can't ban 'peaceful' marches.

They absolutely can ban peaceful protest marches. But its two step and the request has to come from plod. First they impose restrictions and if they feel the restrictions wont be complied with, they can request approval to ban it.

s12 gives the power to impose restrictions simply due to noise and disruption... S13 gives the power to ban in the event they don't feel the restrictions will be complied with. It's a sad situation when the PM and HS, get ignored by plod, but its his call.

The chief plod is screwed either way.

Rumours abound of a reshuffle - something Rishi! meant to get round to but hasn't yet had the time...better hurry, six weeks til xmas, then the New Year with an election upcoming. Maybe the HS really is trying to get herself sacked to avoid the sh!tshow to come?

I think the organisers of the protest could have picked a better date, it gives their detractors the opportunity to conflate the protests with anti Britishness.
With such a large gathering , those in charge would need to be wary of the possibility of infiltration by agent provocateurs intent on causing disorder for propaganda purposes.
