Thatcher did become power crazed towards the end, but the list of things she got right is far far longer than the list of things she got wrong.

Bought our first house then ,figured if we could afford it then it would be easy when they came down,it was.yep, trebling unemployment and 17% mortgage rates were two of her successes.
When Thatcher came to power, the UK's budget was in such a mess that the IMF had been called in by the previous government to stop us going bankrupt. A total over-haul of the economy was required, scaling back public spending and ending government support of failing businesses (such as mining). This led to a lot of public sector jobs being cut to try and save money, and obviously there were a lot of people losing their jobs as the private sector tried to get back on its feet. The high unemployment at the start of her time as Prime minister was due to a mixture of economic factors, and the policies put in place to try and fix the economy. By the end of her time in charge, however, unemployment had fallen drastically.

But the things she got right, where tiny in comparison to the things she got wrong that destroyed the country.

Maggie just brought us back closer to living within our means which some people didn't like. There were quite a few booted out off jobs who certainly deserved it.
And of course Maggie never destroyed any industry. She just had the guts to bury it which was the only thing left to do.
Her reign in power makes todays puppet politicians look quite lame.
A lot of people must have been wearing rose tinted glasses pre 79.
Thatcher may have sold the silverware but Brown sold the gold for a pittance of $256 an ounce against todays $1650 costing the country billions.
