As the article said, it doesn't fit in with the WWII narrative .
Like the looting and black marketeering that doesn't fit with the spirit of Londoners in the Blitz, it needed to be suppressed to keep up the accepted version for morale and self image etc.

The sinking of the MV Wilhelm Gustloff ( death toll over 9500, of who 4000 were children and infants ) also went "un-reported" at the time.
