IMF predicting UK the worse performing economy according to the news..

Well, yes, but that was/is never going to happen anyway. If could have been lowered by 5% at any time, but it wasn't.

I'm not sure that many in this thread are interested in the economy as anything other to whine about, and satisfy their need to re-exress their own tropes.
Anyone who doesn't fall in to one of those might like to hear this podcast, which is a comparison with France:
Interesting. Some of it reminds me of UK parental companies. There were lots of them. Cadbury was an extreme example - even houses and a better education. A job for life for many, security, sports facilities, even social activities. Lunch - a decent canteen often huge. This attracted people and also allowed them to be selective when choosing people for jobs. Training would usually figure as well - at least for some.

They also work flexitime as it's called in the UK. It can fit in with many jobs.;) One unusually snowy winter caused me some worry with that. Left me way short of hours. They decided to relax the rules. I was then transferred to another branch and paid a one off for loosing flexitime. Management there just couldn't see how it could work. The branch before working flexitime wouldn't offer it either.

The salary aspect is also interesting. There is a big difference in some areas. Then add the hire and dispose aspect. Good to encourage investment?

We have our management class too - famous public schools tend to help get there.

And it hasn't now being the point with it being a tax that goes under the radar when tax is being discussed.

Bad times so this increases here and in France

The trade in goods deficit, excluding precious metals, widened by £1.6 billion to £61.6 billion in the three months to October 2022,

France's trade deficit widened to EUR 13.8 billion in November of 2022 from EUR 11.6 billion in the previous month.

Don't forget we can export at zero VAT for use in the EU now we are out.

Opting for more tax for better services, tends to be easier if you aren't in the small group of people who already pay most of the taxes.

People tend to want to pay a bit more tax for a lot more service, not a lot more tax for a bit more service.

So what your are saying isn't correct is it.

We've always had that ability.
As stated not lower than 15%.
The figure involved is quite a sum of money when you couple it with all the tax the government takes (council tax another that gets lost in the argument)
The question is are we getting vfm and should we paying more tax on what seems a significant figure already.

Yes. We now have the ability to do something which won't happen anyway.

As stated, we did have the ability to reduce the Vat rate and didn't.
