Does it? Just because they might want to continue trading with the U.K. after its withdrawal from the EU doesn't necessarily mean that they might not also want to try and make such withdrawal as difficult as possible.

No, it's that the EU is run by politicians whose aim is that "ever closer union" and to grab more and more power for themselves over as wider portion of the population as possible. They will have a natural reluctance to let any member state go without a struggle.

Still not answering the question on what benefits the EU actually brings to the UK I see John D ... (as a net contributor to EU funds,,, that would be absolutely nothing)
A 'Brexit' would not be without problems. During the transitional period, the £ will undoubtedly fall, inflation may begin rising etc, but only due to the 'uncertainty factor'.
But in the medium- and certainly long term, we would be freed from the expensive and protectionist EU, and would be more exposed to world prices, which are lower than EU prices. That can only be good for UK plc.
I think there is a consensus that the UK is a more open and dynamic economy when compared with the EU. The remainers say that we would be better able to influence the EU to become more competitive if we are at the table. But we've been at the table for 40 years and we seem to have less and less influence.
The best way we can push the EU in the right direction is to leave. If that major jolt, along with the Euro - and migration problems, hastens the demise of the EU, then we would have done ourselves and Europe a big favour.
