Especially retailers and especially your date of birth where it is not strictly required, only desired. They want it because they want to know what age brackets their customers fall into.

And while I'm at it, let's have a whinge about all these retailers who insist you sign up for a card without which you will not get the best prices.

Of course, as part of the sign-up process, they demand your D-o-B.

Customer details with a DoB increase the value of the data by a factor of about 5. The Ts & Cs normally allow them to "share" your data with "carefully selected partners".

That translated to we will upload the data on to a DMP and allow others to buy access to it.

I never give the correct DOB unless its a government agency or bank etc.
Quite often they don't even get my real name and address.

They want data fine, but they can have fake data IMO.

I gave my DOB to my local department store when I took out a loyalty card. I get a little something on my birthday each year. Mrs Mottie gets lots of birthday treats from companies she has signed up to. We never seem to be bothered with sales calls or promotions as we always opt out of emails/texts/phone calls etc.

Lol.

Aren't you the bloke who shares his age and birthday every summer?
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no....yes!

But I'm not sure companies pay people to trawl sites such as these for DoBs
And they wouldn't know if I was a customer of theirs.

There are better ways to get DoBs of customers.
Like getting them to sign up to a "loyalty" card!

I knew someone who procured advertising from a commercial tv channel. They held an unbelievable amount of personal data on their viewers including their age range, jobs, interests, political leaning etc etc And so could very accurately target ads to their audience.

Same with surveys from online retailers or phone call. It all starts off innocent with questions like did the product arrive on time but then at the end of filling in for 5 mins it starts with the - what is your age bracket, income, own your own house and all that stuff and that is where me responses end.
Got a call proporting to be from ipsos I said ok so long as there are no personal/private questions and they said ok. -- First question "how old are you" FFS I told them we didn't get very far did we.
