The government asked this owner of a high-end hotel if it could rent the entire hotel for a year to house immigrants. The government offered its own agency staff to run the hotel, suggesting the owner sack his existing staff.

That's your government DIYnot, the one you voted for. This is how it spends your money all you plumbers, joiners, sparkies and hod carriers. It is beyond ludicrous; what are you going to do about it?

I'm not sure about that story, the bloke is a bit of a rum bugger and likes publicity.

That's not to say entire hotels aren't being booked for that purpose, saw one a few weeks back in Herfordshire, and witnessed the negative effect it was having on nearby hospitality businesses.

The immigrants must be going somewhere. We heard of a thousand landing yesterday, but a day's news is never followed up. Where are the hundreds that landed one day last month now? Those that landed a year ago - where are they now? I'm sure the government has the situation under control though.

Yep best western in our town announced it was shutting to become an asylum seeker hotel staff issued with redundancy notices all room bookings weddings etc etc cancelled refunds started to be handed out . A week later u turn plans cancelled and back open as normal

The likes of Notch and John D used to try to tell us how little asylum seekers receive from the state. We are paying £4.7 million a day to hotels to house these so-called refugees - with free food, heating, education and advice whilst taxpaying British families are having to cut back on necessities.

Are you happy with this DIYnotters?

Has Melanie put her finger on why the left feel morally superior?

120million quid wasted on that ridiculous Brexit funpark - are you happy with that?

thats because this country has had 12 years of free market capitalism destroying this country

Andy, you believe in capitalism: well guess what: capitalists make weapons for profit and sell them to dodgy countries who start wars and create refugees

Andy you are a right wing supporter: so you support the corruption of capitalists making money from Russian oligarchs and that has funded Putin to bomb Syria causing refugees

Andy you support capitalism, so you support UKs trade with Saudi Arabia, a country that is engaged in a proxy war in Yemen, guess what we get refugees from Yemen escaping war

Andy are you saying we should allow refugees to work?

the only reason they have to be funded is because the law prevents them working

do you think we should give them nothing and let them beg on the streets

as usual you have no solutions, only hatred

Bet you could "power swerve" around a whole island.

The government have an international and moral duty to provide accommodation for asylum seekers during their asylum application.

If the government wanted to reduce the costs of that accommodation, they should speed up the process, including the appeal process.
Successful asylum applicants would be working sooner, and unsuccessful applicants can be returned sooner.
In addition the government could provide that money to local authorities who have run out of suitable accommodation for asylum seekers, which is why the asylum seekers have to be accommodated in hotels.
The government prefer to spend that money in the private sector rather than pay it to local authorities.

Then there is the 116 children, some of them as young as 10 years old, in the care of the government who have gone missing from those hotels over the last year. These children have been traumatised, and they are vulnerable to abuse, slavery, exploitation, etc. The government have excluded themselves from being held responsible under the Child Care legislation.
The whole system stinks of impropriety, ineptitude and indifference.

Regardless of your views on this, one thing can't be denied, what a complete and utter f**k up our governments are in terms of dealing with the situation. I've concluded they're either completely and utterly incompetent, or there's a hidden agenda that we the masses are not privy to.

I'm going to say it again. If you're genuinely fleeing a horrendous situation, of course by default that means you're going to travel from your home country to an adjoining country that's accepting immigrants. However, there is absolutely no need for these people to be traversing x other countries to get to the UK.

And before I get shouted down with things like 'but they have family here now' that's a part of the friggin problem. If this had been nipped in the bud earlier, some of these people wouldn't now have family members here, perhaps encouraging them even further to head for the UK.

If the Netherlands suddenly found itself under heavy attack from Belgium, Germany and Denmark and we were friendly to the Netherlands, it would make sense for us to say 'we're sending ships to get you out, or of you end up leaving on your own gobbled together boats, we'll send help.'

Equally, from their perspective, it wouldn't really make sense for them to say 'thanks, we'll use you as a stop-over, we're ultimately heading for Canada.'

The whole thing's a complete and utter f**k up.
