Recently enclosed porch. There are original brick columns supporting roof/second floor.

I believe it's considered brick veneer as there is wood inside columns.

I am insulating and drywalling new walls.

What do I do with columns? I have been given 2 completely different sets of advice, both from contractors.

1) just insulate as possible and drywall. Area will be heated and I need not worry about condensation behind insulation.

2) Do not insulate or drywall over columns as condensation will cause mold/rot problems and may compromise the brick.

I don't mind the appearance of brick, but I'm in Central PA and on days like today (12° F) the brick is very cold and I can feel air movement.

I appreciate your taking the time to respond...if it was affordable? I'd move to U.K.
The next 4 years is going to be a bumpy ride in America. :)

On the brick columns, insulate them, then fit a vapour barrier, then plasterboard (drywall to you).

What is important is you have a vapour barrier on the warm side to stop vapour travelling through to cold surfaces.

Wishing you all the best in Trumpland this Christmas

Ugh seems more like Muskland..
Anyway..insulation is faced with paper, im assuming that's enough vapor barrier.
It's particularly important I get this right, I may not leave home for next 4 years!

Probably not to be honest.

to be confusing there are vapour barriers and vapour control layers

You need a vapour control layer, it goes on after the insulation and before the drywall

Im not sure of suitable brands in the USA also it may require a particular type depending on your climate.

heres a bit of info on vapour control, it is important as interstitial condensation can be a real problem in timber construction

good luck with that, Im sure America and the world will be feeling the effects of 2 egomaniac narcissist's fighting for power
