Is plumbing still a trade?

I can mix cement and get bricks and stack them together and make a wall

I can mix plaster and paste it all over walls

I can get wires and solder them together

I could get wood and make a doorframe

I can buy a tin of Dulux and paint it on a wall

Hell I can even change my own brake pads!

Can I just rectify
I'm not a Bricklayer
I'm not a Plasterer
I'm not an Electrician
I'm not a Joiner
I'm not a painter & Decorater
I'm also not a mechanic.....

A big mistake people make who DIY their own plumbing with some plastic pipe and pushfits is really simple... they don't use inserts.. whoops! They go out and buy it and think it just fits right together! I bet alot of them used a hacksaw to cut the pipe too...

Unless you have been on a propper plumbing course, you won't know the depths that plumbing actually goes, it goes far beyond some Hep2o pipe and some push fits.

I'm on a 4 year plumbing course, on my 3rd now, that shows how much there is to it

(I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass, just my views)

People think by removing a pipe and replacing in kind makes them a plumber or gas fitter.

They have no clue to friction loss or velocity or developed length or about proper venting. An apprenticeship is a great start ( mine was 5 years 10,000 hours and 744 class room studies) BUT the real education is after one is in the field as a journeyman and doing all aspects of plumbing and then deciding if they want to specialize or do a little bit of of all aspects..

Still its an on going education

I apologise - my questions were unclear. I'll rephrase....

Which specific "people"?

Who, specifically, are "they"?

I find domestic plumbing pretty easy. Im a course cowboy and did this for a mate.
Im right chuffed. Lashed this in and had it up and running with 400sq/m of uf heating commissioned in 3 hours flat.
Gotta be a record. :D The client is a professional pipefitter and he is delighted with what I have done.

norcon, thanks for getting me up and running, really pleased with the job. the carrier bag with £10,000 in used 20's is behind the knome in the garden if you wanted to call for it. by the way did you notify oftec and will i get that certificate you promiosed me?

plumbings much like my game (sparky).

The "basic installation methods" are fairly simple, although an experienced pro will do a better, neater and more reliable job.

but like sylvan says the devil is in the design and experience- joe average may install a system that works, and maybe evan one that's compliant with standards, but he won't design a system thats best suited to the property. It's the million-and-one bits of knowledge that only years of experience can teach that go into the subtle differences between a professional install and an amateur job.

I'm a spark, so have basic knowledge of various trades, I do a little associated plumbing, and could probably plumb to a better standard than joe public- but on bigger stuff, and when I have my own house I'd leave a full system to a guy with the level of knowledge to do it well.

People who do diy plumbing or bricklaying are not claiming to be qualified tradesmen.

They just wonder why it costs so much to do simple jobs.

whats the definition of a simple job, and whats the definition of so much?
