Most of the Jews who died in the Holocaust were from Eastern Europe and Russia as such census figures from these countries range from unreliable to non existent, in 1947 there were still millions of displaced people all over Europe it would have been almost impossible to gather reliable statistics on the Jewish population.
The six million figure was an arbitrary figure agreed upon for compensation purposes which is why that number is sacrosanct and can't be tampered with.
When it became obvious the Germany was going to be defeated the World Jewish congress began drawing up plans for suing post war German government for reparations and even then they were talking about 6 million even though they could not have known the full extent of the losses.
Germany as defeated nation was is no position to question these figures so they just paid up and have been paying ever since, it is interesting to note that the number of "Holocaust survivors" receiving pensions from the Germans has grown rather that declined as one would expect.

Mass cremation isn't as straightforward as you think, these Holocaust promotion sites like to make it all sound so easy, it's just a matter of piling a few hundred bodies up and throw on some petrol and they just burn by them selves as most people don't have any experience of mass cremation they are easily fooled by sites like Nikzor who use an emotional approach to hook their audience, they talk about gas chambers and then show horrific photographs of Typhus victims and in some cases photos of German air raid victims as if this is proof positive millions died in gas chambers.

If you take thousands of people from their homes and incarcerate them, packed together in unsanitary conditions, and force them to work for long hours with very little sustenance, and beat them if they get too weak to work, what happens is a lot of them die, possibly of conditions like typhus. If you think that is reasonable and consider is just dying of natural causes there's something wrong with you.

Why would contemporary documents of the day refer to mass cremations, mass killing of people for no reason other than they were 'surplus' and of 'no use'?

This Auschwitz document is published online: 'Bericht' is Report. It's a report on how things are going at Auschwitz - dated December 1942.

It says; “imbeciles, idiots, cripples and sick people have to be removed from the camp within a short time by liquidiation to unburden the camp..."

It also says; "Poles have to die of a natural death contrary to the measures applied on the Jews”

What reason do you give for people writing this stuff at the time. These aren't post war documents influenced by history and mass hysteria of confused eyewitnesses - they are business documents written in the cold light of day. There are hundreds and hundreds of similar documents. Look them up for yourself. If you could just give any sort of rational explanation as to why anybody would write these things unless they were writing about things they were actually aware of at the time it might go some way to explaining how you reach your conclusions. (To use Joe's favourite device - they won't!)
