Lighting Circuit Help

2 individual lights controlled independently, or both on/off at the same time wth a press of that switch? is it a single or double switch?

There are 2 plans.

There is Plan A, and there is Plan B.

PLAN A:
  • Learn how lighting circuits are wired.
  • Get a multimeter and learn how to use it.
  • Identify which conductors are which at the switches and the light positions.
  • Check for voltage present, circuit continuity, switches working etc
  • Track down the problem and fix it.
PLAN B:
  • Get an electrician.

- Room has 2 individual lights
....

Were these controlled by the switch you have changed ?

Was it previously a 2 gang switch, ( two switches on one plate ) ?

Or have you changed a one gang switch for a two gang with the idea of switching the lights individually ?

Does one now work and one is not working ?

If it was previously a two gang switch was there a short length of wire between two of the terminals that has gone missing ?

It might be that one red is the live from the CU and the lights that are working and the other red is the supply to the lights that are no longer working. If that is the case then the two reds need to be connected together as well as going to both switches.

The switch is a 2 gang 1 way switch; so the 2 lights are controlled independently of each other from the single light switch.

Tere has been no other works on the house; all i did was changed this one switch and then the problems started, so its go to be linked to this blasted switch.

Post photos of the ceiling rose wiring for both lights, does either light work?

Do the two lights that the 2 gang switch control work?

It may be that the 2 gang switch is on two separate circuits, so check the house for any other fuses or circuit breakers that need resetting. It's not uncommon for lights to be fed from a fused spur unit from the socket circuit, with a 3 or 5 amp cartridge fuse.

Also, think if you could have disturbed any of the wiring above accidently. Even just accidently knocking a light fitting etc could disturb a bad connection.

If you are sure the two lights are on the same circuit & one works but one does not, try linking the two red wires in the switch and see what happens.

EDIT: Sorry, bernard. I did not read your post all the way through.
