Of course not. It would be an open circuit. Maybe a faulty terminal in the socket not making good contact with the tester? Pins too short on the knock off tester?
If the tester were of an unsatisfactory design, or was faulty, then obviously results from it would be meaningless. However, if the tester were satisfactory, and working satisfactorily, then its pins would presumably be no less likely to make good contact with the socket's receptacles than would be the pins of a plug plugged into the socket?
